Sup /out/ -- let's discuss MREs. Was looking for any suggestions on best bang for your buck to throw in your closet just in case of an emergency situation, but feel free to discuss MREs in general. I've seen people bring them out on hikes before. I've got a pack from Ameriqual in my closet that I'm probably gonna be looking to cycle out soon.

Feel free to discuss vintage MREs and modern MREs, SteveMRE posting is welcome, but being a schizo larper anticipating the world ending in two more weeks is not.

Sometime during WW2 the US military started using alternative rations that were lighter and more compact. During Vietnam, they started specializing. Instead of crackers and chocolate, they sought out actual food that was really compact and wouldn’t freeze during long range patrols. The solution was the LPR ration.

Sometime in the 1970’s the government contracted a company called Oregon Freeze Dried to supply them. They’ve been making the long range patrol meals ever since. Up until a few years ago you could buy them on various surplus sites. They came in the typical OD greenish-brown packaging, vacuum sealed. The manufacturer has been selling the same thing on the civilian market for years under a trade name, and the civilian packaging meets the military standard. So now the military just issues the civilian packaging to people on long range patrols.

It’s literally Mountain House Pro-Packs.

At the end of the day, last thing I wanted to do was figure that thing out. I mean it's.not hard but I was like WHY TF did we not being a stove and just boil water and have mountain meals.

I've had a bunch but it's pretty LARPy. Hard to beat regular store bought pasta beef stroganoff, hamburger helper stuff, instant noodles, hell they even have jambalaya and stuff just like Mountain Meals.

It is fun using the heat pack chemical things just don't burn yourself. I honestly hate that boiling water plastic pouch, it's smell like PVC chloride or some other horrific shit you should not put in your body.

Avoid anything with "cheese". Even the tuna and seafood ones are better than their south west nacho or taco stuff with "cheese"

Hell, just crackers and beef jerky is a better alternative to some of those things. Think outside the box, try and experiment different things.

They were reasonable up until COVID. What I spent on an A+B case is what a single will cost, maybe more today. You can't even get them at the exchange anymore since they get scooped up for resale the second they hit the shelf. I was planning on a 3-4 yr multicase rotation for hurricane prep but that's not cost effective anymore.

The 3rd party stuff is mostly decent food wise, but lacking the accessories at the same price point.

The military gave my family 2 boxes after Hurricane Katrina, they were all pretty shit tasting. There were a couple of good meals, but shit like spaghetti was just awful, and sometimes you could taste the chemicals which was pretty awful.

I lived right by Sam’s on Airline Highway. The National Guard was giving them out a few days after the storm. My brother and I got in line every day in different cars for a case of water, an entire box of MRE’s, and an optional tarp (which I didn’t take every time). Eventually they switched to a different civilian disaster meal, which was chef boyardee and other things packaged to one of those styrofoam trays like ground meat. I had eight (8) cases of unopened MRE’s for years.

Now there’s a civilian version of the MRE called the Humanitarian Daily Ration. The packaging is the same with different printing, they’re all vegetarian (there are NO meat options, at all, as far as I’ve seen), and the two I found online were pretty gross compared to MRE’s. This is what they were giving out after Ida, according to some friends in the area.

For the $7 to $10 you pay for a single MRE or dehydrated backpackers meal you can buy 3 cans of your favorite soup and a pound of white rice.
Mountain House has those LRP rations modelled after the rations long range patrol (LRP's) carried in the Vietnam War when they were out LRPing. I thought it would be cool to throw a few in my truck 'cuz LRP is cool as fuck.
They want $15 for each of them. I can buy a lot of soup and rice for $15.

The LRP rations are literally MH Propaks. If you’re on a long range patrol, you’re given the same vacuum-sealed Mountain House meal you can buy at Walmart. The contents of the entree are the same, and they’re now in the same packaging. And when I say “literally,” it’s not the typical Zoomer misuse of the word.

The only MH meals I find at Walmart are the two-serving ones and most of them suck but the biscuits and gravy is pretty good for dehydrated slop. I'd take that over the "cheese omelet" any day.

I don't get the appeal. If you're planning to bug out then Mountain House or similar dehydrated camping meals provide more calories/oz while being significantly cheaper. If you're planning to bug in then rice, beans, oats, etc are way WAY cheaper
In either case the shelf-life is comparable. Maybe not quite as long as MREs but I'm sure you can manage to eat your way through your stash in 5 years or however long it takes for them to go off.

It was all bulk surplus that wasn't stored well. Not sure why they cut out all the FRHs either. Even if they were janky it wouldve been better than nothing.

My parents and brothers lived in LaPlace, I found the old cases shoved in the back of the garage a few years ago and weeded out the worthless shit. Really the only things worth salvaging were the accessory packets and some side items.

Freeze dried have a shelf life up to 30, people have eaten ones past the 30 year mark and they're fine.

Somewhere, somehow MREs got this mystique about them that they last forever. Some components can last well beyond any reasonable expectations, but most of it goes bad just like any other processed foods.

You can deep freeze practically anything and it'll retain its nutritional value and not kill you. Someone finding a 30yr old MRE from cold storage and it being in great condition is expected. They found one of Shackletons camps in Antarctica and the food stuffs left behind were still in edible condition. Those were only in basic, expected retail packaging for the time.

Depending on the age the MH portion could be in a plain military packaging (like the entire meal) or in the commercially available Propak packaging. The latter was changed just a few years ago to meet military standards.

Pretty sure Steve mentioned the LRP is no longer. He was doing a video on one of the new cold weather rations and that was the only one freeze dried now. I might have that backwards but one of them is sundowning.
