I watched a video where some dude bought bags of playsand from home depot and panned it and found gold.
Obviously he only found like 20 cents in gold but the fact remains that gold is not nearly as rare as you think.
The "rare" part is making it profitable with massive equipment that uses no actual physical labor.
If you're panning a river- black sand is always found with gold.
But.
Gold is not always found with black sand.
Quartz is also a gold bearing mineral.
So if you can find land with quartz and black sand there's a serious chance of finding gold.
