Most hunters varied in scruffiness based on wealth, the type of hunt and where they were hunting but the whole "tweed jacket, puttees and deerstalker" getup for large game was and is a very European thing (especially British) and was never very common in the new world outside of WASPs on an outing with shotguns. You saw some of that in the eastern woods sometimes but usually they just layered with plaid shirts instead of a jacket and out west they pretty much just dressed, as always, like cowboys.
