Theres something fucking awesome about driving rain and thick fog.
Plus the scottish cold numbing your hands as you look at the map.
It makes a walk/run a memorable thing.

This is kind of an off-topic question but do you guys ever long for nice big forest to cozy up in?

I'm from Oregon and I think the scenery in Scotland is gorgeous, but the lack of trees seems so bizarre to me.

Well, I live near Kielder Forest which is pretty big, but artificial, but it's still nice. I would really love some massive deciduous woodland though, I'm tempted to go to eastern europe to just camp out for a few weeks.

It's no lie, we're not without our fair share of barren heather covered hillsides. Personally I would LOVE to replace every piece of shitty heather with woodland but I must also admit that when you finally reach that sheltered spot or that patch of wood it seems like that much more of a haven.

We have records from the Romans that described the region northwest (aka the highlands) of the antonine wall as having "impenetrable" forest. The Roman expedition had to go around the east hugging the coast.
So while there were certainly people there for a long time at least until antiquity the forests were largely intact.
