>>2636279I started using a hammock nearly exclusively around 2005.
>Does any cheap hammock do? Cheap hammocks (such as what you might find on Amazon) are often too short. The length of the hammock determines its space. The width plays a little roll as well, but length is really the key factor. Anything less than 10’ should be ignored. Cottage vendors are all making 10’ or 11’, with the latter more common. If you’re 6’ tall, you’ll want an 11’ hammock.
Build quality generally isn’t an issue, though admittedly I’ve never seen any of the cheap stuff from the internet. But a gathered end hammock is literally just a rectangle of fabric.
Fabric type can make a difference, but not much of one. Thinner fabrics are generally more stretchy and lighter.
>Do I need a sleepingbag or can I just sleep in my clothes with a blanket?Depends on the temperature. When it gets below about 70° you’ll need insulation under you. An underquilt is much better than a pad, but if you’re a poor person you can get away with a pad. A sleeping bag works alright, but its insulation is lost when it’s compressed under you.
>I want to travel lightIt can be a little lighter than a tent if you’re not using a pad or underquilt, but weight varies more with the seasons. It can be a lot heavier in cold weather.
