I've recently been seeing them around my home in NY since July. It's been kind of concerning since I've never seen one of these for my entire life. Just for clarification, I don't live upstate but I don't live in NYC either. For me it's about a 10 minute drive and i'll be in the Bronx though. I saw 3 of them just sitting on my rail 5 minutes ago,

Are we all doomed? What dangers do they pose to humans directly? Also, these things have been around since 2014?

I don't think it's dangerous to humans but it can damage some crops. they get btfo'd by most industrial pesticides so you shouldn't be afraid of their new presence causing food shortages either (their impact would be in any case much smaller than the political, economic, and ecological issues we have nowadays). If you have fruit trees though they may be harmful to them.

one of the first videos I ever saw on youtube in 2006 was some kid in an asian country (I think Korea) going around a lot of trees infested with these and squishing massive amounts of them with a large flat rock or piece of brick.

Eastern PA, they've killed 3 trees in my suburban front yard. It's been about 5 years since I started noticing them. Significantly less population this year. I think birds are starting to incorporate them in their food chain. Just step on them when you see them. Annoying little fuckers.

Probably emerald ash borers that did that.
Lanterflies don't kill trees. Their favorite tree to suck on is tree of heaven, another invasive species from China, and everything else is just supplemental food. So really what happened is that an invasive plant's natural enemy finally caught up to it.

unlikely, they do tend to swarm all over specific tree species though from what i saw last year. you'll know pretty soon if they're dying out or not, theyre mostly nymphs now.

fish eat em, so that's cool. they don't smell bad like stink bugs. Don't sting or bite. Definitely seeing their numbers go up in my area with each passing year, in the mid atlantic region.

Beaver county PA here. Last year they didnt exist at my property. This year they are all over my sumac saplings, which i dont mind since sumacs are basically giant weeds anyway. Then my neighbor showed me his big tree that was covered with them. His sandstone decor rocks at the base of the tree were now black, and his picnic table under the tree was black. He said his family thought it was sap leaking while they sat under the tree eating. I could feel the pitter patter of the substance hitting my skin. I told them that wasnt sap, it was the bugs pooping and they looked it up and immediatly became disgusted

If you look at the PA county quarantine map, its all counties that i-76 passes through

This reminds me of the gypsy moth invasion from like, 20 years ago but at least for me, its not that bad. Yet.

Cumberland County PA here.
They are absolutely everywhere here. When I circle the plant at work I step on about a dozen of them. I'm seeing them I'm the woods and all around my apartment, as well in urban areas. It's my first year here so I don't know how bad it is. Never seen any of them in state college.

Out along the susquehanna at the nature preserves in Lanc co., they're literally covering entire shaded faces of adult hardwoods to the point where you can't see bark, the ground shadow cast by the tree is similarly densely packed with hundreds of them just sitting there stealing oxygen.

if you want to vent some anger you can literally go slaughter them in the hundreds of thousands at Clark Nature preserve in Pequeua, PA. I believe they applied a fungal-based foamy spray to such trees last year and it didn't do shit. there's just millions of these fuckers crunching under foot. they're using these windy high elevation forests with almost no foot traffic as ultra-efficient staging points for invasion down into the surrounding york and lanc counties.

here's hoping some form of entomopathogenic fungi is developed or naturally fills the niche to wipe the slate clean

that said, they're almost MIA in identical high elevation forests in Michaux, ofcourse nowhere near as lush or untouched by human activity as some of the amazing forests out on the susquehanna. high elevations at Michaux seem to be all barren dead standing trees or otherwise dense rhododendron.

They very clearly prefer specific hardwood species as their choice of places to hang out on

I was thinking about walking up Mt Nittany and kicking cairns, but that sounds like a better idea.
