I want to drive ten hours each way to a gun show to meet a YouTuber doing a meet and greet before he dies of cancer.

This brings up a problem I've been avoiding, and that is we have no one we trust to care for our parrot.

It's not about this guy, the is going to be an ongoing issue if we ever want to go anywhere.

This is probably a waste of time, but on the off chance anyone here as useful advice or experience traveling with flighted birds, please tell me. I think I'm actually going to try this, and I'll need all the help I can get.

I should also mention that we're looking to do hiking and that's why I'm posting here. Currently we just go to local state parks and come home same day.

If you've got a local bird specialty store they may offer boarding, if that's an alternative you'd accept. Otherwise the best bet is to modify a small cat/dog carrier into something suitable with perches etc. for the drive, and if you're staying longer you can get folding travel cages that you could set up in a hotel room or whatever. Depending on how docile your bird is you can also get harnesses and leashes for them, if you can get one onto your bird it'd allow you to let him/her out but without the risk of flying away.

One other option, though one you may not be OK with, would be to have your bird's wings clipped, it's just the feathers that they trim and they will grow back eventually. My mom has been letting her Timneh's feathers grow out after 10+ years clipped previously and she can fly pretty well now after about a year of growth, and this is a bird that had never flown before.

The vet says the bird isn't getting enough exercise as it is. She's on medication for it after nearly dying due to what we suspect was carbon monoxide poisoning from a dirty oven. (Clean your air fryer tray!) I'm trying to get both of them to exercise more, the bird and the wife. They both move a bit every day but it's not enough.

i know jack shit about birbs, but, doesn't there exist a thing, like what you have with dogs, where there is a pole in the ground with the leash going to the dog allowed to freely rotate? the same thing, but instead of in a yard you could attach it to a backpack or something?
parrots are smart, could probably learn that it could "freely" fly in a certain radius around you, and it would always know where you are, and you would know where it was?

That's probably your best bet then, or maybe a bigger travel cage if you're gonna stay a while.
I guess the other option, if you can afford it, would just be to fly instead of driving so you can only be gone for a day or one night at the most, birb will probably be fine for that long.

guess my advice then for a parrot waaay smarter then two angry budgies that has to flightless for a while would be to shower it with love, never, never, never leaving its sight, but also shielding it from unnecessary noise.

this ofcourse dependts on the personality of your parrot

Long ago I had a Hahns McCaw. Smaller than yours but here’s a few tips…maybe.

I modified a small dog carrier for travel. One of the plastic ones. Put wood dowels across for him to perch on. Sounds like you got that covered though.

I moved from Wisconsin to Florida. During that time, he liked to hang out on the steering wheel sometimes. He got to see some sites and enjoyed the sun but was smaller than yours too. As other anons said, let him hang out on your shoulder.

They’re obviously tropical so you don’t need to worry as much about heat (vs fur covered pals) but keep an eye on the AC.

Plenty of water and favorite snacks.

Mine could be a noisy fucker so if you sneak them into a hotel consider covering the cage when you are out.
