I am interested in a kayak for transport throughout and across the local lake. What should I know? I haven't used a kayak in recent memory but I guess due to the terrain/amount of coves, maneuverability is more important than speed.

It's pretty straightforward. Hold the paddle rightway round and get to it. Could practice a few rolls so you dont panic and can right yourself should something tip you.

Keep in mind the size and weight in regard to wind. My lake is long and acts as a wind tunnel and some kayaks I've tried get blown off course way easier than others. I've found shorter fatter kayaks worse for crosswinds and end up just trying not to spin around more than I could go forward.

I'm no expert tho

I'm more of a canoe fan though.

I'm also more of a canoe fan but I have a lot of experience in a kayak, it is a very easy thing to do, though its still important to learn how to remount a flipped kayak from the water. You're going to want something comfortable if you'll be out there for a while so get one with a proper seat in it. I took a fishing kayak and mounted a boat seat in it but it makes it top heavy so i have to be more careful. This past spring i got off on shore to poop and tried to lightly jump back in to boat facing backwards to launch off the shore and flipped it so quick

First time I ever kayaked I picked it up in a matter of minutes. It’s almost self explanatory. Don’t overthink it. If you are going down a rapid River then yes, there is more technique necessary.

Thanks anons but I guess I was specifically wondering what type/length to get. Seems a lot of kayaks were geared more towards fishermen.

What are your plans? do you plan to camp or just day use? If you want to carry a lot of gear you want a touring kayak with a cockpit and storage in bow and stern. They are longer and skinnier and some have rudders. They seem more tippy at first (initial stability) but are harder to tip than wider kayaks (secondary stability) If you just want to fuck around for the day you can get a sit on top kayak that is more initial stability but less secondary (easier to tip once you get past a certain point). In general, the longer/skinnier the kayak the more efficient/faster it will be....

If you are in a touring kayak and tip you either have to roll it back up (hard to master esp on touring kayaks) or wet exit by pulling the skirt and get out....conversely if you tip a sit on top you just turn it over and get back on

Yeah a basic sit on top kayak is fine if you just wanna paddle around for fun every now and again but eventually if you wanna get into camping or fishing I find it quickly becomes awkward and claustrophobic trying to do basic stuff on a small kayak without all the rod holders and such. Hence my preference for canoes.

If you want to camp, you'll be best suited to an open top canoe.
If you want to maybe sail, you'll be best suited to an open top canoe.
If you want to paddle during the day, and at a stretch camp for a night, you'll be best suited to a kayak.
It really depends what you want to do, maybe get in touch with a paddling group in the local area, see what they use and when.
