Considering that at least 4 US states (UT, CO, ID, WY) and parts of Switzerland got their first snows of the season in August already. I'd say it's probably fine. I'm planning on doing some x-country skiing this winter when the snow depth reaches about 3 ft.

I skied less last season than most other winters because millions of powder loving fags descended upon my home, turning a twenty minute drive into a multi-hour drive. It’s a lot harder to ski on a workday when I might be stuck waiting in traffic for 4 hours. I’d rather ski shitty snow with no lines and no traffic. But I get it, I’d be one of them if I didn’t live here.

sorry to intrude, any advice on how to learn ski mountaineering without any skiing experience at all? do i need to buy regular ski gear and learn with that, and only then switch to mountaineering skis? or can i go for it directly?

i'm not very interested in ski itself, i want it more as a tool in order to be able to do longer harder alpine routes in winter

I did this last year. I bought the Dynafit Seven Summits Ski set (skis + AT bindings + skins) and went to boot fitter to get proper fitting AT boots.

I then went to a local resort and learned on this.

You should learn the skills at a resort this year before doing any SkiMo. Significantly lower consequence. But you can just go right for the gear, touring boots, ski, bindings etc will do fine at a resort. Maybe not quite as good as dedicated resort stuff but they'll do the job.

Bought my season pass, guess it's about time for me to find ski boots that fit since my buddy wants me to learn to ski this season. I like snowboarding, I want to go sideways, but also I'm a good sport and love spending money.

Definitely learn to downhill ski first.
Rent gear one (1) time.
If you're still having fun at the end of the day and want to continue then buy some used gear.
You're not ready for mountaineering until you can effortlessly ski every slope at a normal resort.

You're right about 2023 and 2018 being mostly the same but since 2010 boards have gotten better at carving with more pop because everyone shifted to hybrid camber from hybrid rocker. Some shit companies like NS keep hanging onto hybrid rocker but everyone else moved on. Also, volume shifted boards that you can size down significantly on didn't exist in 2010; the Warpig wasn't released until 2017.

El Nino is less of a factor than you think when it comes to winter jet streams and storm tracks; the artic oscillation determines how much cold air flows south for weeks at a time and with a strong negative AO the storm track dips far south. Last year was the 3rd La Nina year in a row but the season was much different across the west than the other two years that benefited northern latitudes.

I personally feel like the latest tech is helpful for novices (to make it easier) or competition level (for that extra 1% advantage) but there's a point where the average snowboarder might "feel" a difference with a new board but it doesn't translate to more ability on the slopes.

I think new bindings will benefit a typical boarder more.

I'm gonna buy a snowboard, complete beginner only done it a handful of times. 170lbs 5'8 male. Not gonna do jumps and stunts, just gonna ride down hills at a ski resort like the normal way. Money is no object. What's the best one to buy?

Buy a Capita Mercury, it won't totally destroy you when you're learning and just skidding turns. Eventually when you git gud and can put it on rails you'll unlock the sidecut and actually start to have fun. Alternatively the Ride Shadowban is a good option for a directional twin. If you're never going to ride switch and aren't scared of a steep learning curve do something true directional like a Ride Peace Seeker. Based on your weight I'd reccomend a 156 or 157 for all boards.

Honestly I'd reccomend a beginner board like a Yes Typo or K2 Raygun for a season or two to figure out if you even like snowboarding.

google camber and how it affects riding, there are cambers that are easier to ride for beginners and some that are more difficult. this is where trying demo boards at the park comes in handy so you can get an idea of how different camber affect your riding. majority of beginner boards are 'true' camber and twin-directional (the front and back of the board are the same) so youre not going "backwards" if you flip your board around.

I had a lot of issues as a beginner and kept getting flipped around. I only ride goofy foot on skateboard but once I finally figured out snowboarding I was totally switch stance (just because the mointain kept forcing me to go backwards)- I can ride either way comfortably now.
A directional board is no fun for me.

Stiffness and flex are the main differences between beginner and advanced boards. When you're learning on a stiff board that needs to be driven hard to carve it'll buck you around and be hell on your knees when you're just skidding your turns on blues. Also if you're trying to pop off rollers and side hits, it's more difficult to engage a stiff board's camber to jump.

I skied 60 days last season, first season, utah
I had piece of shit 86mm midfoot skis. I got pretty decent. Are 106mm underfoot salomon qst too big a jump for my second season?

El nino generally sends cooler and wetter temperatures along the southern half of the US and warmer and drier than average temperatures in parts of the northwestern US. One such example is that around 50-80% of all winter storms in the upper midwest come from the Pacific (often the same storms that dumped snow on the Rockies to and traveled northeast). It even influences hurricane and storm patterns in the Atlantic.

this is because el nina faded pretty quickly at the end of janurary and gave way to a more el nino-esque variation, hence why california got those legendary feb - apr dump runs and the PNW had plenty of snow to last by the end of december (but got pretty slushy as the year went on). so we got a rare winter where we got to experience a mix of a strong la nina/strengthening el nino effect. basically everybody won (except east coasties)

I'm on snow professionally about 100 days out of the year.
A couple days of work with a travel day on either end kinda sucks for the days-available to play, but it's fun getting to put tracks all over the country and work in different snowpacks/climates.
Might get to hit AK this year, finally. Been invited to a couple events out there for a few years but the cost and logistics of getting truck/trailer/sleds/etc across the continent and international borders makes it difficult to justify.

Take an avalanche course. Because you should. And it pays my bills.

Would like to get another 100 day season. Might be my last one in Utah, so I kind of want to try to ski all four of the Utah classics (Superior, Needle, Timp, and Tuk) in a single season if I can.

I hit Timp this past season, it was pretty great. A group of people were skiing nude down while I was ascending so I saw some titties. The snow up top was pretty wind scoured which spooked me out, but 100’ or so lower it got quite nice. I was gonna hit Superior and needle in the late spring/early summer but my touring partner fucked up his hand so it all fell apart. I’ll probably hit timp Glacier in the next few weeks. It’s fun skiing in September but pretty annoying how every person you pass has to have a conversation about it. Yeah I’m going to ski, yes there’s still snow, no it’s not going to be good snow, yes I understand it’s crazy, yes you should have brought your skis too, yes there are a lot of rocks, yes I like skiing quite a bit, yes I’d ski every day if I could, ………….
