in the beginning of October im going to salt lake for a few days, then moab and the parks by it for a few then taking the 550 for some scenic mountain driving and a hike if there are any.
any recommendations for good hikes? ive only started looking at stuff so kind of know the major things to see. anything other than the obvious would be cool. im not doing any off-roading by the way.

Depends on how long you want to go. Park City has a bunch of gorgeous 1-5 hour hikes. Armstrong Trail is a great starting point of you want something light with good views.

i have a day in slc that is just for hiking. so an all day hike would be cool. if not that than a couple small ones would be fine. im doing a shit ton of driving already so id rather not drive super far from the city if i dont have to. ill look around park city. but it looks like theres trail heads off the roads between every mountain in salt lake.

ANYWAYS it seems like ill be spoiled for choice in salt lake. ive been looking it up and seems like any road between the mountains will have plenty of trails. the one around mt timpanogos seemed like a favorite. also antelope Island seemes really cool. theres so many amazing roads that go between mountains that can just loop around right back into the city. its like i could stay a week and be fine. im pretty excited.

yes cottonwood canyon or alpine loop have fucktons of places to explore, or just to drive and enjoy. Hiking ain't my jam, besides the obligatory steep hike to the top of mt. Timpanogas, or I often drive up to tibble fork and do the two mile hike to fish at silver lake.

maybe stop down by Fillmore and hike inside the lava tubes, there's a ton of caves and lots to explore, just be careful of random holes you don't see if you go off the trail

hope you enjoy gettin out in Utah, keep an eye out for pretty rocks and crystals when you're in the desert, it's a nice shithole even if the great salt lake is a fraction the size it used to be :(

thanks. The trail coming off the overlook, if that's what you're talking about seems real easy to get to and it looks like it has great views the whole way. looks like most of the trails are down near Provo anyways. I've got a bunch bookmarked already.

Lake Blanche is gorgeous, gets a bit crowded though.
Mt. Olympus if you're looking for less crowd, more exercise, and also good views.

There are plenty of others, but those are the two that come to top of mind.

You can go to the peaks above the lake too if you're feeling it, but just reaching the lake and looking out back to the valley is all that is needed.

if i have time and the path seems simple i might. but I seriously have no idea what I'm going to do that day. I've got like eight or so trails bookmarked varying from 2 mi to 10 miles. All generally around Mount timpanogos. I'm just trying to give myself a bunch of options. That's usually how I do these hiking things.

Oh nice. I've never actually hiked around Timp, but it seems like a cool area.
I saw white pine on your list, that's a good one. I've skied and hiked that area. Red pine also good.

I've been to Moab a few times. Grandstaff trail right outside of town was pretty good. Sand dune arch trail I thought was also super interesting in Arches. It's a quick stop along your path through if you like it.

Dead horse point for star gazing if you're into that shit and there's a new moon with no/little clouds.

looks like itll be a few days from a new moon so they sky should hopefully be pretty starry. i absolutely plan to be out one night somewhere around moab. don't know where though. it won't matter really, don't plan on doing a big night hike and i cant imagine ill have to worry about people. ill bookmark grandstaff. be nice to have a trial not in one of the parks.
i can hardly think about anything else besides this trip. im so damn excited. the Midwest is so gay for outdoors stuff and where im going it seems like i could drown in it. i hope im overwhelmed.

There is 5,200 ft of prominence (vertical relief) from Grandview Pk to downtown SLC, a distance of less than 10 miles. Within metro SLC there is 6,850 ft of vertical relief within 10 miles from Twin Peaks to White City.

I’ll make sure to look for the rental car / out of state plates at the Lake Blanche trailhead on the Saturday you’ll be here. If it’s a rental car make sure you add on the extra insurance. Matter of fact you’d be better off not even driving to the trailhead. Enjoy your stay.

I don't know, I'm a mountain biker. All I know is don't hike a trail that's obviously meant for bikes (banked turns, jumps).

There's like hundreds of good trails within 30 minutes of SLC. Pick a canyon, look on trailforks or whatever. The Wasatch back (Park city) tends to be less steep than the cottonwoods and millcreek that are in the Wasatch range. Get there early if you want close parking. Or pay $5 for millcreek canyon.

picrel is Desolation lake. You can get there from big cottonwood canyon, mill D trail. Packed on weekends.

Red Iguana is pretty good but overrated imo.
The Pie is a local favorite for pizza, they go heavy on the toppings though I I like to keep it simple there (1 or 2 toppings).
Localz in Sandy is good but a little pricey.
Thai Isaan has a lady cooking there that’s based as fuck so I like it, food is pretty good too.
