Back in 2001 I spent a weekend camping and doing dayhikes alone in the White Mountains. Went up Mt Madison in the rain and slipped off a boulder in King Ravine and when I fell between boulders my right leg wedged between two rocks by my weight kept falling. So, I snapped my shin in half and then fell like 6ft to the ground between boulders. I was in so much pain I literally could not move at all. I feel like it took me hours to roll into a comfortable position under this fucking sickly pine tree.
I didn't even own a cellphone and was alone. I laid there in the crevice between boulders in this giant boulder field for two days, until at dusk I saw someone with a headlamp hop across the gap above me and I yelled out. Thank god he heard me. Guy rushed down and gave me his jacket, water, and protein bars, and went down for help. In the middle of the night a whole crew of Fire/Rescue and AMC staff arrived, and after an excruciating 5 hours they carried me off the mountain as the sun was coming up.
Emergency surgery to save my leg and bolt me back together, and only after the delirium wore off would they let me eat food. So it was like a good 3-4 days going hungry and then I had a giant McDonald's meal in the hospital and it was the best fucking meal I will ever eat.
I literally don't even have photos because it was 2001
