what kinda bug is this?

In Southern Ontario, and saw an insect I've never seen before. Has a build similar to mosquitoes & crane flies, but it's body is about 2.5" and it's about 4.5" with it's legs.

Anyone in the area familiar with these?

I think it is a Giant Crane Fly. Closest match I could find was:
Family: Tipulidae (Large Crane Flies)
Genus: Tipula
Species: Abdominalis

Only difference I see is the shape of their rear ends. Maybe that's male/female?

Giant mosquito. Careful, it will swell up like a water balloon with blood. Been known to make people pass out.

Yep giant crane fly. Those things are pretty common in canada. The scale of them really freaks people out who aren't used to them. They look so much like a mosquito people assume that's just what they are is a big bloodsucker. Mostly they're just annoying. My cat used to love hunting them down though
