I feel like I’m general people cheap out on things and spend $20 on a headlamp, when if they spent $50 they would get one that’s leaps and bounds better. The same could be said about most gear.
You don’t have to buy the snake oil $200 headlamp, but getting one that’s one step above the knock off china tier one is a worthwhile investment.
Last thing, people into the outdoors need to look into brands from other industries. For example my rock climbing friends all bought black diamond or Petzl headlamps that kinda suck ass. Because those companies don’t specialize in headlamps, they specialize in climbing equipment. They outsource their headlamp design and manufacturing to china. Look at a company that specializes in headlamps, like fenix. Ironically fenix is also chinesium but it seems like they know their shit
