>>2642758>>2643062People make a big deal over the "walk anywhere" thing but it's meaningless because the network of footpaths in the UK is so huge and comprehensive that you never need to leave them anyway. The paths are the same routes people used to walk between the towns before trains and cars, there's a reason we have OS maps in the UK and there's no US equivalent. Off the footpaths is either barely passable moorland or farmland which is so crossed with walls and crops that you need to follow the footpaths across it anyway. Just zoom in anywhere on this map and see for yourself how many footpaths there are.
