-Light
-Medical (incase something bad happens)
-Water container
-Something to sleep under (poncho does fine)
-Something to sleep on (closed foam mat)
-Something to sleep in (sleeping bag or blanket depending on weather)
-Appropriate footwear and clothing
You don't need food but it's a bonus. A knife is a wish I had it tool when you need it. I never go without. Cordage helps with stelter and often if you are decent at trapping, it can get you food where there is game. It depends on what you need.
Overnight all you have to be able to do is sleep, stay hydrated and walk out. Children spent a night out under a tree all the time when lost. The question is what are you doing overnight and what do you want to stay comfortable or just persist until rescue? Or maybe you want to get practice. You might be doing some serious miles and an overnight for that might demand some decent foist aid and definetely water refil.
