Washing an old pee stenching backpack

I bought a used 70l backpack for under 15$ (60PLN) at a local second hand, JEGMA MALUNG SWEDEN (big blue one on the right). It has a full rain cover, metal frame and is overall very sturdy. I patched two small holes it had and was ready to hand wash it but my gf's cat peed on it and it reeks now even after washing it two times by hand in hot water. Also hot water and vigorous washing seems to have damaged some of the water proof coating in those side sachets.
What do I do anons?

Nice catch. It's going to smell worse once you've been hiking with it for a few thousand miles.
I have to hang my hunting packs in the garage. They smell so bad. People take a step back when I take off my pack after a few weeks of walking.

for the waterproof coating you can buy spray on DWR coating, and refresh it yearly, it should perform great. nuclear option is vinegar, which will replace the piss smell with a vinegar smell, but it will go away eventually. idk, you could try "laundry stripping it" it's a witches brew soak wash you can do in a bathtub for stained, grimy shit.

I use dish soap and cold or lukewarm water for preliminary washes, but you've already done two. Try using vinegar or diluted vinegar, then rinse with cold water, after that if there's any vinegar smell wash with a sodium bicarbonate solution and rinse again with cold water.
Also kill the cat and cook it as rabbit, your girlfriend won't know the difference.

I also bought a flanel lined Forceatt sleeping bag with confort -2°C to 10°C (I mostly use sleeping bags in late summer and autumn with around 12°C night temperature, and there werent any flanel sleeping bags for 15°C) and its massive, takes 2/3 of the main compartment of my new piss backpack (above the blue curve to the top is the main compartment).
Its comfy and good quality but I have no idea if Im going to fit it any better and carrying a 30l cylinder would be a pain.

That doesn't look like a compression bag, though maybe that has something to do with the bag being flannel. I would put it in a waterproof bag and fix it horizontally on the lower frontal part outside, near the buckles.

Putting stress on the zippers will break them eventually. If the bag compressed without issue you can get one such bag for not very much money.

You don't need hot water, that's not going to do anything.

Get a big bottle of vinegar, place it in a bathtub or waterproof box, and completely fucking douse the thing.

Make sure all of the fabric is impregnated with Vinegar.

Hang it to air dry naturally in the shower.

For some reason the Ions from the Vinegar will bind on to the molecules causing the smell and carry it away after the Vinegar evaporates.

This will get most smells out of fabric. It's what I use when I end up getting my shoes soaked walking through muck.

You might want to try running the pack through a washer and dryer before doing the vinegar trick to sterilize the thing, but Vinegar will have the same effect if you use enough.

The Vinegar smell will be gone once it completely evaporates, but the downside is that your house is going to smell like Vinegar while it's drying. At least it will deodorize your house at the same time.

Also I would like to clarify: by "Vinegar" I hope it's clear that I mean "Distilled White Vinegar."

I've used other Vinegars, but they will leave traces of other smells in the fabric which can attract mosquitoes in the wild.

You can't just wash out cat pee, it's got some chemical in it that won't break down naturally for years. Buy some cat pee cleaner, it's got a chemical which breaks it down.

Maybe there's some home-brew mix like everyone is saying with the vinegar. But my family has like 12 cats and they all have a bottle of the stuff on hand.

Hot water makes the cat piss set in so that it's basically impossible to remove. You'll have to set it aside and wait for the smell to go away on its own now, which can take months. In the future, you want to soak it in COLD water, then rinse it in cold water mixed with vinegar and baking soda, and then you can wash it with warm soapy water.

isopropyl alcohol is the only thing I've found that gets out the smell of cat piss. soak it in Isopropyl then leave it out in sun to dry off.

Acetic acid evaporates six times faster than water. The residue is other random shit from the vinegar that's neither acetic acid nor water, and if it's distilled white vinegar as >>2644311 says, there shouldn't be much residue at all.
