Has anyone used one of these Maven spotting scopes for hiking or hunting?

This is the model they recommend for use if you're mobile.

Can anyone give me a recommendation one way or the other? I have a pair of Steiner 8x30 Mil-Marines which I've really enjoyed using for picking up interesting things. Now I need something to really get a good look.

I am in the US Northeast in mostly woods and coastlines. The woods are obviously dense but along the ocean I want to use the magnification to really ogle seals and birds out on the banks.

Apo spotting scopes are a meme. Atmospheric distortion almost always limits magnification to below the level where chromatic aberration becomes noticable in a cheap achromat.

Not that anon, but I couldn't tell much difference between my $400 Leupold SX2 20-60x60 and my $1200 Vortex Razor HD 20-60x85, granted it was sunny and mid day, maybe the differences might be more apparent in low light conditions...idk

I am all about finding the best cost to performance ratio...but I can't imagine any optic in this price range being anything other than terrible.

Get a pair of tier 1 binos. The glass difference in low light is amazing. The big three purchases for hunting are boots, backpack, and binos. Everything else is secondary.

I have a pair of Nikon 10x42s. My buddy has Swarovski 10x42s. About 45 minutes after sundown I did a comparison. I looked through mine at some trees 200 yards away, I could see the trees. With his, I could see the leaves. It’s that big of a difference.

That thing is fine for a toy. But when you’re trying to look for an ear flick or antler tine, even in the midday sun, you’re going to be at a loss. Not to mention on a cloudy day or at low light. Also, you can’t spend much time behind a monocular without getting eye fatigue. Where as a $2000+ pair of binoculars on a tripod, you can.

Would you recommend 8x, 10x, or 12x?

The 8x works great except for the lack of detail once you get along the coastline and are trying to look at stuff farther out.

And when you say tier 1, is 1k enough? I wish I could but I probably shouldn't be spending 2k on glass atm

You have to get out in the field to know how much spotting scope you actually need for your purposes. While figuring it out you could even use a cheap astronomical telescope. The major drawback of a telescope for anything other than testing is that it's relatively fragile and not waterproof.

If you're hunting i would get a pair of 10x42 binos or even a pair of 8x42 binos.

Spotters are good if you are looking at another mountain for bucks and you olan to hike over and shoot it. If youre just looking for any legal buck (such as a spiker) then binos are perfectly fine.

The reason i suggest the 8x42 or 10x42 is that the exit pupil of those magnifications is closer to 5mm, which is what the human pupil maxes out at when fully dialated.

I have an Arhlon Ares G2 UHD
15-45x65 spotter and i rarely use it for the day to day stuff while hunting. I only se it when im sitting on my ass was away looking at a treeline for the bucks.

Binos are vortex 10x42 fury 5000 hd with the built in rangefinder....i use them for shooting targets and mapping a hillside's distance.

The power depends on what you plan on using them for. I’m saving up for 12x Swarovski’s for deer and antelope. My $200 8x light weight binos work just fine for archery elk.

If you’re in thick timber, 8x will be more than enough. Where as how I hunt deer and antelope, 10x or 12x would be more beneficial. Handholding anything over 10x can be difficult due to lack of stability. I carry a tripod, which makes the 12x more desirable for the style of hunting I do.

not that anon but size. most x42 are still borderline "compact" sized. 50or52s are usually noticeably bigger and heavier.

it really depends I would say that if you're going x42 get the 10s. the Vortex Diamondback HD 8x32 however have best in class field of view. so for truly compact binoculars like things under x42 I'd go 8x.

It's strictly weight. I have a bino chest rig and although it holds the binos nicely i wouldnt want anything heavier than 10x42.

I live in bc and tend to walk alot, so ounces turn into pounds....especially if i have a deer to haul out. Hell id even like to step down a size and just use the 8.5x42 from swarovski but they're just way too expensive right now.

8x32s are way lighter than 8or10x42s. you save almost a half pound. that's significant when it's hanging around your neck, even though in hand it's not that bad.

Depending on your age and eyes the exit pupil on 10x42 can be smaller than your eye pupil in low light conditions which is compounded with also collecting less light than a 10x50 and being harder to hold steady than an 8x. For daylight conditions or less than perfect eyes it probably doesn't matter and the 42s are usually much lighter to carry.

If I decided I wanted to get a very nice pair (1k) of 8x42s, how much of a difference will I notice from my Steiner 8x30s?

I love the Steiners but the lack of close focus kills me. The infinite focus is extremely handy and I really enjoy it, but the fact I can't see anything within 50 feet kills it for bird watching or similar activities close to home or in much of the woods.

I dunno, don't own anything even near that price. If I'm spending that kind of money on optics, I'm definitely finding somewhere that carries them and testing them in person first. Specs are fine and dandy, but sometimes they are not that accurate. With that said... I have 10x42s and the close focus is listed at 9.8ft on the spec sheet, however I can clearly focus things that are about 7ft away even. I dunno how it would vary between brands and models though. these are $160 Carson vortex clones that I got for $115. I've been blown away at the clarity for the price. On par with leupold bx-2 or vortex diamondback hd... granted I don't get the warranty that comes with those being the downside.

Are their any acceptable alibaba clones of binoculars? I know vortex makes their shit in china so theres probably some offbrand equivalent for 1/4 the price. I just cant see how a good pair of binos is over $1000 in current year. Even $500 is ridiculous. At that cost maybe its worth it to get a digital camera with a nice lens instead. At least it has more than one use.

well, that's why the "sweet spot" is $200-250 binoculars when you're talking "name brand." they are extremely clear and a big jump in quality from cheap ones. once you go to each tier above that, the difference is much smaller each bump up. carson, celestron, brands like that are similar tier for like 50-75 dollars cheaper, but you don't get the warranty of brands like Leupold or Vortex(at least I'd assume), so hopefully you never need to use it. the waterproof sealing and fogproofing and such also may not be to the same quality, but unless you drop them completely underwater I don't think you would know for sure. I can vouch for the Carson RD, I have had them for a while and no issues. I got 10x42s for $115 on sale though. If it Would have had to pay the $160 msrp, I'd have just bought Vortex Diamondback HD or Leupold BX-2 which are basically the same optical quality from my eyes, they usually go on sale for right at $200 which still isn't bad, and you get a legit warranty. This YouTuber is a rich mormon and review tons of really expensive optics, that's where I originally found out about the ones I bought. I planned to just return them if it was paid shilling junk, but it was legit. In hindsight I doubt he would be payed off by a small company like that anyways when he regularly recommends much higher end stuff.

I've used plenty of high end optics. I have Leupold rifle scopes. if you're buying optics for low-light conditions and aren't getting the biggest objective lense possible, you're doing it wrong, regardless of what you spend. anything above x40 with decent glass can make out detail of tree bark under good moonlight. I use my x42 at 9pm in the winter regularly. I can see owls up in trees still with prety good detail considering the light conditions. it's not just a silhouette. you're just being a price shill and have no experience personally I bet. there is WAY more that goes into low-light performance than price alone.
