Whats 20 acres look like? Grandparents passed last year and I just found out last week they left 40 acres in eastern Tennessee to me and my brother to split. No information on whats on the land and just curious if its big enough to do anything with.

You can easily feed a family on less than 1 acre if you're able to put in time every day tending a garden.

I did, it said an acre is about a footballfield and a half, so I tried to picture 30 football fields and couldnt. Thought you guys might of had a better comparison. Thanks for the help though

that's more than enough land to do a small commercial operation if you wanted. my uncle kept himself in food and sold tons of tomatoes grown on about 20 acres. When he got older and I was helping him, he had shifted to doing it "part time" and only worked through the summer, aside from starting his plants. Then he was pulling in maybe 10k a year from farmer's markets in the area. definitely a viable land size for vegetable production or even cattle. as far as visualizing the land, try to plot it out on graph paper. Use a lot size that you know, a lot of people in suburbia live on .25 to .5 acre lots as a reference, to visualize workable plots on your land. and then imagine rows of crops, or just grass growing for hay.

Id be stoked with 15 acres, not huge but pretty usefull. If it's in a place where land is expensive, it could be sold and you could buy a 150 acre /out/ block elsewhere

I find the size of empty paddocks deceptive. In a city that land would fit, what, 50 or 60 quarter-acre house blocks plus roads? You'd take a minute or two to walk from end to end.

My parents have a ten acre block and it's surprising how big it is when you break it up with fencing and trees. There's enough room for 20 or 30 cattle (they rent most of it to a local farmer), plus fruit trees, a house and garden, outbuildings and sheds, windbreaks, etc.

You can do a lot with 10 or 20 acres. Friend of mine built a small house on 5 acres and was mostly self sufficient for food. huge. You can't be self-sufficient for wire wood over the long term, for example. And you can't go for a nice long walk in just 10 acres.
