What watch do you wear while /out/? I have a good collection of nice watches but I'm looking for something rugged. Was considering picrel or maybe g-shock/garmin tactix.

G-shock has at least 14 types.
You should at least look around before asking stupid questions.
btw I'm using a Garmin Venu, it has all the features I need but not really rugged.

I got tired of the huge g shocks and got picrel. Small and light and fits under a sleeve. I wouldn't go swimming with it but it will survive an occasional dunking. Solar powered and keeps great time. $100

Timex Ironman. $40 and many, many batteries later. Tells the time and counts down so I confirm pace with map and compass. Baro, thermo, alti and compass are usually inaccurate on the expensive watches. All-in-ones are typically masters of nothing.

If you want a Garmin, why not get the instinct? I think it's like $300 for the instinct 2 and it has basically all the sports features that a forerunner does, and is pretty rugged, about on par with some casios

Unironically this. Maybe not the best due to the bad readability but I went out climbing and my hand hit a ton of rocks with it on and no scratches, just a bit of dirt that was easily wiped off the edges.

I can only speak for my experience, but it's "fine" I guess you could say. If you're looking to triangulate your approximate position or just generally get your bearings it does the job, not sure I'd try to actually land navigate with it expecting any kind of precision though. My big gripe would be that it only displays a bearing for a few seconds and then just goes back to time mode. In general I'm not really sure how accurate any of its functions are in terms of precision, but it's good enough to allow me to maintain a reference of what's going on around me.

Casio 5610. The perfect watch.

Automatic radio sync so it's always accurate to a fraction of a second. Handles DST automatically. Solar rechargable so you only have to replace the battery every 10 years or so. Small and lightweight so you don't look like a faggot.

That's what it says on the dial but it doesn't have a screw down crown. You don't have to worry about getting it wet but it's not a swimmer.

It's worth it. Go for it. There's no penalty, and the watch will continue to work just fine, +1 new feature, after you're finished. Remember to reset the watch after the battery swap to clear any remnants of old memory.

I've never understood why Casio didn't just leave it enabled at the factory? Many of their other el cheapo models have countdown timers, so why did this one had to be the exception?

The coundown mode works in 2 ways.
(1) Countdown, then stop.
(2) Countdown, then repeat.
You can get it to switch between the two.
But there's no indicator for what mode it is in on the lcd.

So my guess it is because the lcd can't properly handle it.

If you're actually gonna take it out and you're not just looking for a "rugged outdoorsman watch" for your cosplay, then just get a cheap Casio watch for $20 or something. You want something that can get beat up, get wet, scratched up, and still work fine. You don't want to worry about losing it or breaking it out there.

It's not a fashion show. Get something functional and cheap, unless a Casio or similar is too heavy for your wrist lmao

24/7/365 for the past five years or so. I usually get a new one every year, just because I scratch up the face a lot. Never had one fail in any way.

The only time mine fail is because the strap cracked after 2-3 years. Been through three that have broken this way.

Great value. When it breaks there's no trouble in finding a replacement.

I bought a cheap $10 watch from the drug store last year with that intent and it lasted about a year before the battery ran out and it became useless. No way to change the battery (but even if there was it would probably be cheaper to just buy a new one). I don't think I'll do that again.
