There's always going to be kids thrust into it by idiot parents and there's always going to be kids who are actually motivated and driven. There's a reason only 5% of scouts historically since inception of the title, have ever become Eagles. Its tough as fuck and the vast majority of 16 year olds dont want to organize and lead a major construction project or go live in the wilderness for a week.
Its 100% worth getting your kids into, but obviously do your research and make sure whatever Troop you get them in doesnt have a bad history.
Also if they get the opportunity get them out to the High Adventure bases.
