I got lost for the first time this year, and I've been doing this shit since grade school.I know how it happened, I was foraging mushrooms, so I was looking at the ground and not my surroundings. There's a couple of other things I learned from the experience though. First, never rely on phone gps. When I first realized I was lost, I thought this was going to save my ass, but alas, there was no signal. Second, depending on previous weather conditions, features like wetlands and ponds, might not be reliable guide points.Water features may disappear, or spring up everywhere, depending on rainfall. A rainy summer turned my hiked area into a mess of brooks and swamps, which not only caused confusion, but added to the distances I had I to walk trying to navigate around them. And finally, always have a source of drinkable water. When dehydration sets in,muscles begin to cramp, and walking can become almost impossible. I will not be bushwhacking again, until I've purchased a GPS and some form of water purification.
