For me, it's the denim jacket. The ultimate outdooring jacket for just about any non-extreme condition.

>Lightweight, can be worn without feeling too hot in the summer and late spring.
>Malleable enough to be folded into backpack
>Can be worn while walking through brush and sticker bushes if you didn't bring a long sleeve
>Can layer over a thicker sweater without feeling restricted
>Generally durable canvas or denim
>Able to thread and fuzz cuffs or hem for a quick tinder pile
>Comes into a multitude of colors for the environment, able to walk from street to sticks and back.

If you're worried about raining and getting wet either wear a rain poncho over it, stick in your pack and just wear your wool sweater or prepare ahead for the forecast and bring a thicker wool overcoat. But for 80% of the cases from early spring to early fall, this is the ideal shell.
