some of the 8000s have very small true peaks that are along ridgelines. Reaching the true summit often requires more time or is difficult to find in bad weather. Messner for some of the 8000s didn't reach the true tippy top summits

He’s right. When I first began climbing, I thought it was all about being the best and gnarliest and first and blah blah blah. Now I realize it’s different for everyone, even two folks roped up together may be up for different reasons. But we go up, and we form bonds of brotherhood and realize our true potential. Things only this large behemoth of rock in front of us can show us about ourselves and the world. We go up and come down slightly different people with shared experience, but each different on each pitch. Mountaineering isn’t about conquering mountains — they have all already been climbed. It is about conquering yourself.

Technically he didn't. He missed Annipurna's true summit by 5 meters. That is pretty substantial. It would be like me stopping short of the finish line at this weekend's Chicago Marathon and claiming that I ran it.
