Cabela's was kick ass before Bass Bro bought them out. I have some really nice Cabela's brand neoprene waders, flannels, and jackets that have lasted over 10 years. They don't, though. They're an apparel store that happens to have SOME climbing gear. People think REI is some sort of rugged hardcore place because they walk in looking for the latest Cotopaxi jacket and they see an incomplete set of mismatched carabiners next to the clothing. Scheels has a better climbing gear selection than REI, and that's really sad to say, because Scheels' climbing gear selection looks like it was an afterthought.

I honestly can't speak on this, since I don't climb, but my local REI has much better selection of tent camping and backpacking gear than any other outdoor store I've been to. I've never been to a bass pro, Cabela's, etc. that wasn't 80%+ realtree clothes, because clothes sell.

Cabela's and Bass pro are 100% better than REI for hunting, boating, and RV gear, I will agree on that. Since those aren't my main interests when going /out/, I prefer REI's camping and backpacking gear selection.

At my nearest Scheels the climbing gear is relegated to half of an aisle that it shares with hiking gear. Its woefully lacking wheras the nearest REI mogs it. REI may be largely a clothing store, but its not like Scheels's first floor and much of the second isn't entirely dedicated to clothing either. At the end of the day they go after different demographics anyways. REI goes for more of the genteel crunchy market who are into climbing and hiking. Bass Pro/Cabella's wants the redneck market which is why they sell hunting gear and weapons. Scheels kind of positions itself somewhere in between as an everyman store, which means skimping on climbing since its ultimately a pretty niche activity under the massive umbrella of "outdoor recreation".

I love Scheels. I spent a very nice day there with my femanon friend the day before she moved out of state. i loved all the /k/ and /out/ stuff and I was introducing her to more and more of that stuff, and she loved the home décor and bath sections. It was a nice day.

Really depends on the area. In my area I have a cabelas and a bass pro and although the store layout is extremely different, the merchandise and ratio of fishing/hunting/apparel/whatever else is identical. Essentially it looks very different but the store is the same. I'll always be grateful to the old (60+) worker and fisher named Frank who helped me get my first spinning rod setup a couple years ago at Cabelas so I'm pretty happy with the them. Mainly fly fish now with the autistic hobby of tying flies and they actually have a way better supply of fly tying supplies than the local Orvis does.

Although, I will say, the gun guys at my local Sportsmans are pretty cool. I went to Bass Pro to buy a new shotgun but hadn't gotten around to changing the address on my liscense. The Bass Pro guy interrupted me in the middle of explaining my situation to tell me there was absolutely no way he could make that sale. I ended up buying the same gun at Sportsmans an hour later.
