a 6 digit is a value determined from eastings and westings, we take the bottom left corner of the grid of the location we want to find a 6 digit of, follow the horizontal lines to let's say 60 then imagine splitting the grid into 10 equal parts, and follow the line closest to itthe building or field or forest we want to go to, let's say it's close to the corner, our 3 digit will be 602

for our next 3 digits do the same but with verticals, northings, let's say 30 and 4

our 6 digit will be 602304

How do you navigate in the middle of a forest with no real discernible landmarks?
Hard Mode: You went in without a frame of reference or pinpointing your exact location on a map.

I suggest this is a realistic scenario as you would only typically pull out your map as a last resort if your satnav phone or electronic device failed.

my hiking mates don't appreciate it but i pull out my map and compass as we exit the car on the parking lot and try to keep track of our location at all times looking for landmarks like streams, lakes, hills and trails as we pass or cross them
passing hikers often ask where they are and how long until they arrive at x because they only know they're on the right trail, well until they aren't i guess
wherever i haven't gone before the map stays in my hand

i usually choose a direction and start walking then I take the heading of the ridges and valleys i cross and match their direction to possible locations on the map. then you look at those possible matches on the map make predictions about what you should expect to see next and use the process of elimination to narrow them down. you cant get a fixed location by just standing there and looking around its a continuous process of making and confirming assumptions and verifying. even still you can spend half the day hiking before you eliminate all other possibilities in your area. from there its just a matter of tracking distance and course.

op, another pro tip is to, if you don't live in the US where u can get topo maps easily, get your maps from army surplus stores or ask someone who works in your town hall, they usually have cold war maps in the basement somewhere, I have a whole roll of my entire local area and most mountains of my country in 1:25000, if you're in eastern Europe this is even easier

Bearings are broken down to degrees/minutes/seconds in the format: DDD MM SS. If it's a degree under 100 you drop the first zero, ie. 040* would just be 40*.

So if I were to go 20* north, 15m, 10s it would come out as 201510.

From there identify your location on the map or starting point, or use available visual reference to figure out your position. Figure out where you want to go, draw a straight line between the two points, align your compass with grid squares of the map and figure out your relative angle to a destination. There will be magnetic variation (not to be confused with magnetic deviation). Map may have magnetic variation or isogonic (magnetic) lines which you can add or subtract to give your magnetic heading. Figure out your standard walking pace by practice and then you can calculate how long it should take you to go from point A to point B. If you cannot travel in a straight line, because you probably aren't a bird, then you need to figure out where you can go based on topography map, and plot time/distance of when you should turn to a new point.

Handy pneumonic us pilots use is East is least, west is best for adding or subtracting variation, least being subtraction (+W / -E).
