Same. I remember being a kid and my mum and dad would point out the satellite or the ISS. I can see it become very regulated soon. They've started fining companies for being irresponsible with satellites now which isn't much but it's a precedent. Obviously shit will ramp up the moment something happens like a Chinese satellite smashing into an American military one. Then it'll kick off and there'll be more laws than you can shake a stick at.

I grew up in the East Coast and only got into the outdoors in my 20s. I saw the night sky unmolested for the first time in my life in August and I genuinely cried the first few nights. Your soul isn't complete until you can bask in the stars alone.

One night while I was working nights at Walmart in Central Alberta I forced everyone outside to watch the northern lights for 30 minutes. Some of them hadn't ever seen them before and it was a pretty great experience. It really puts things in perspective.

It's really no wonder the sky was such a large part of evert culture on earth in history. And no despite the space race of our century, most people can't even see it.

Last week while I was cowboy camping I noticed a lot of satellites if I defocused my eyes. There were so many it made me slightly angry/sad. There would be like 2 or 3 moving symmetrically across the sky in a grid-like pattern.

I put my bedding ahead of my tarp so I can look at the sky as I fall asleep. feelsgoodman. The tarp breaks frost so I get less moisture in my bivy too.

I've done a rafting trip in this area east of SLC a few times. Not sure what class it is exactly, but I got up to piss one moonless night and there was enough light from the stars that I was able to navigate around as easily as if it were daytime.

I've been to the really dark areas before, stars were so bright I had trouble recognizing constellations I was familiar with.

Also the most surprising thing was that Jupiter was fucking BRIGHT. It was brighter than any other star I could see in the sky, easily. It suddenly made sense why the greeks and romans named it as king of the heavens.

Even the stars and planets you can see from the middle of the city are worth watching, at least with binoculars.

Great advice for anybody spending the night at a Class 1 area is to wait until a new moon to starmaxx. The moon itself is a pretty huge contributor to light pollution, and the difference between a class 1 area with and without moonlight is fucking huge

I was in a pretty dark area during full moon once, there were like zero stars to be seen.
When I was in the same area with no moon the starlight was so strong it cast shadows and I could see Andromeda. It was amazing.

Fellow Swede here. That is Jupiter and not Uranus like others have said.
Uranus is between the Pleiades and Jupiter though and you can spot it with a pair of binoculars. Just locate the stars that I have connected with orange lines and the bottom one will be Uranus and will be very dim but visible. You can also see the moons of Jupiter through binoculars so you should definitely get yourself a pair. You can easily find a pair of 8x40 binoculars in a thrift shop for like 100kr.

This picture is long exposure trickery. I've been into the middle of true buttfuck nowhere outback, some of the best skies anywhere on the planet outside of the ocean or Antarctica, and the stars were fantastic but you never get this coloured nebula bullshit.

Thankfully my parents live in a rural area and we get really cool skies almost on the daily. I was once meditating and pondering on the constellations and realized that the whole fucking sky tells a story.

Heracles against the Hydra, who is next to Ophiucus, with the Dragon creeping near for example. Or how you can actually see the myth of Andromeda with Cepheus, Cassiopea, Andromeda, Pegasus and Perseus all being close to each other.

It's a shame most people will never even see the big dipper

While light pollution is horrible, it's not like you need to go to the middle of the atlantic ocean to see stars.
