Would getting any generic leather and compound be OK or something branded? If so, which brand that's not super expensive?

Get some old leather belts from the thrift store or your closet, cut them into 10" lengths, and glue onto a flat board with contact cement. Press them flat, in a vise ideally, with full contact so you don't get any ridges or high spots from areas the leather wasn't being squeezed.

it's all about flatness
i use a flat peice of ply wood with compound rubbed in, it is random chinese crap. i have gotten knives hair-shaving sharp with that set up.

The only place I used to strop stuff on who's in my workshops doing a final sharpening of chisels. I use that green sharpening compound from Lee Valley Tools it comes up three or four Oz bar. I bought one bar about 30 years ago and I haven't needed any more since the stuff goes a long way.

The extremely cheap green shit from China works surprisingly well.
For my common use knives (i.e. they are to use, not to look pretty), one of picrel style shits, a small DIY strop with chinese green shit and it's good enough to shave hair.
