Is it autistic to use a 38L backpack to do 10 mile hikes? I don't have a small one and since I only hike during cold, or rainy weather I always carry extra layers, and stuff like batteries and lights. 38L is definitely more than enough and sometimes I feel autistic carrying it around, I feel like 15L would be enough but I don't want to spend money on one.

Yes,
But I've used a 30L pack on shorter hikes, so who the fuck am I to say anything.
15L for extra layers and all might actually be too small, depends on how compact they are, I guess.

just max out the compression straps and make it less big? i mean 38L is way bigger than you need for most day hikes or even summit stuff but I use my Talon 33L all the time for winter or high altitude where my extra layers won't fit in my normal 18L REI pack

I only have one backpack and it's around that size, so I use it for every hike, including hikes way shorter than 10mi. I don't worry about it.

I decided to buy this instead, just need something smaller for easy hikes, I always carry another set of base layers around in case of emergencies, but even then 38L seems to big.

18l is too small for a 15" laptop, literally a purse. At that point just take a fucking packable sphincter bag. At least that would be useful to pack as a spare bag later.

Depends on where you are i suppose, I've walked 10 miles just going to the city and back and besides a bottle of water i didn't feel I needed anything, but that was rather close to civilization.
If you are wanting a justification though you could consider it rucking especially if you add more weight.

my sleeping bag, underquilt and down parka alone take up 40l.
the other 40l is food, water, stove, fuel, 20m 7mm static rope, hammock.
on the outside two 60m dynamic ropes, ice axes and crampons. and wear my harness with my rack on for the walk in
but all that is only because I camp overnight on mountainsides.
any day trip especially only 10 miles just carry a water bottle and wear your jacket you dont need anything else you are close enough to society to just go back any time

This thread seems like a good place to ask. I'm going to be doing some hiking for the first time in washington state parks next month and I have no idea what pack to buy. I don't plan on overnighting anywhere, just returning to my car and going back to a motel for the night. I just plan on doing morning/afternoon hikes on what look like well-known trails, maybe even try a moderate/hard trail if I'm feeling okay about it and its early enough in the day. So I dont know what all I need.

I figure about a 20L for rain jacket, extra warm clothes/accessories, some food/supplies and 2 1L bottles of water. I have no idea what else to bring and I'm aware weather conditions change and accidents can happen, but again, not sure what pack to buy. I figure too much is better than not enough, though.

If you're just getting into shit don't even bother buying a specialized backpack, make due with what you have. A school bookbag for instance would do just as well. As for packing, youre on the right track, but id recommend adding some 1st aid stuff, bandana, a pocket knife, and bear spray
