I have a Counter Assault Bear Keg, which is absurd for solo backpacking, but I got it cheap. It'll be good when my kids are a little bigger and we start family backpacking.

I used to have an ursack until fucking squirrels tore a small enough hole to go inside and take everything out. Since then, I've succumbed to carrying a fucking heavy ass bear vault.

I have a BV425 sprint that only weighs ~1.7 pounds and I stuff the fuck out of it, 1-2 day trips is a lie, it can hold enough food for 3-4 days and 5 days if you aren't a fat fucking fuck. I then take 550 parachord and tie it to a tree.

What is everyone's solution to this? I string my shit up sometimes lower than this out of necessity but idk how to get a better line in conifer country in particular.

Yeah obviously this is how I do it but is there a better way to string a line in territory that doesn't have long branches typical of deciduous forest? I like the horizontal line (not sure what it's called) in the video for the feeder. Although the bear gets to it, this does seem like a decent way to string a bag in conifer country which it appears to be in the video. I just don't know how to get a line up a trunk like that. I can figure it out, just wondering if anyone hear had any resources on it.

I either do two ropes on two different trees and hang the bag between them, or find a tree that's fallen or leaning over. The bears in Montana haven't learned to chew through the ropes, so the PCT method is unnecessary.

And the second end doesn't necessarily need to go over a branch either. You can just tie it off at the ground so it pulls the food away from the tree if the first branch is high enough.

I guess it just takes awhile to find an appropriate tree. Especially in Appalachia, the treeline higher up is all smaller conifers and they are basically small Christmas trees so the higher branches don't stick out enough and your line will get caught in the lower boughs. I tried basically slinging the line around the top with a rock attached but it came loose and almost domed my gf. Still haven't gotten an answer for this but barring killing yourself or others that seems like the only way to get a line high enough in that sort of ecosystem.

That's just kind of how it is. There's not really a good way to do a hang if all you have is some patch of krummholz where the tallest tree is 10'.

You really don't need to "bear-proof" your food if you're anywhere in the northern Americas. Bear attacks and even sightings are rare, and we never raid camps which appear inhabited (if there's a light on or a fire going etc.). Just put a clearly visible light over your sleeping spot and your food will be fine.

I expect many places that require bear proof containers to take ursacks off their approved list in the next few years.
Too many instances of bears managing to tear through at a seam.
Someone needs to put Bearikade in their place tho, an aluminum tube wrapped in CF is not that damn special

Cuz it’s 200ci larger and 5oz lighter than a BV500.
That 200ci is room for an extra 2 full days of food, and could be the difference between having to cache food or resupply.
They also claim to be more secure.
If a bear manages to fuck up the plastic tabs on the outside of a BV it’s over.
Still overpriced by $125 imo

Been using pic related for a few years. Only been to grizzly bear country a handful of times (glacier, tetons, yosemite) and never encountered a bear so I can’t really comment on the real life use. I’ve taken it into black bear country with the same results so I started using an ursack to see how long I can go without having to carry this 2lb piece of plastic up a mountain.
