I found these apple looking things on the street near my apartment. Are they edible?

lucky! theres an abandoned orchard from pioneer times near my place and i love to steal fruit from there every fall. also at my old place there was a fig tree overhanging over the sidewalk at a neighbours house, fresh figs are so good

Hard to tell from the picture, but are they yellow with a fuzzy skin? If so, they're probably quinces. Those make great jelly.

Apples are usually more regularly shaped, more sphere-ish.
Quince fruits are more irregularly shaped; when you look at it from down below, they are not symmetric.
By the >>2656512 photo it looks more like an apple... it looks quite alike to Antonovka - a late fruiting apple that was used both for culinary uses and as a rootstock. It used to be quite popular in eastern Europe.

OP here. This is definitely an apple. It’s quite firm and doesn’t feel waxy. I’ll eat it after leaving it in my fridge for a bit

Because that's what they look like and most probably are. Try finding wild crab apples next time - they're smaller, harder, more bitter and sometimes sour but have quite an aroma. You can make verjus out of them.
