any anons have expirience with high top / paratrooper style boots? are they useful or just a larp? they seem pretty nice for ankle support and keeping water and mud from your feet but idk if theyre a good idea if u don't intend on jumping from a plane. thoughts?

They look good, I've done hikes a few miles long with them, some restoration work here and there. They aren't waterproof, they are comfortable. I would not go backpacking with them. Unless conditions are super muddy or icy, traction is more how you walk that what you're wearing, and the flat sole does surprisingly well. Thinking about buying another pair soon, as a cobbler fucked up the boot resoling it.

also, buy the factory seconds on eBay, you save a huge chunk of change.

Leather boots are good for keeping water out but once wet and hard to dry

When I was much, MUCH younger, I had a pair of those that laced to the fucking knee. Most comfortable hicking footwear I've ever owned. Also doubled as lower leg protection against thorns and such - and whoever tells you that doesn't matter, hasn't seen a thorny bush in his fucking LARPer life. Lost them to lack of maintenance (have I mentioned I was much younger, right? I've learned since).

LARP. The huge heel stack makes them exhausting to hike long distances in, and the gap below the arch of your foot makes it a nightmare to walk in uneven or rocky terrain. 8" boots also get hot as fuck.

Don't spend $400+ on hiking boots. The only reason wildland firefighters use them is because they're a requirement and they get a stipend to buy them.

the most general terms i can put it in, are that boots like this are really good for off track walking, but are complete dogshit for on track walking. the inverse is true of trail runners and to a lesser extent modern hiking boots.
