They’re called ant-lions. They’re insects. Ants wander and fall into those pits disturb the dirt like a bug caught in a spider web and signals the ant-lion living under the pit to pull it under with its pinchers and eat it. Drop an ant into one next time and watch, it’s pretty damn cool.

Sometimes if the ant doesn't fall all the way to the bottom, the ant-lion will toss sand at him until he falls close enough to grab.

Yes, they are ant lions (picrel). Pretty cool creatures and harmless to humans.

Some wasps do nest on the ground but the nests look like small holes in the floor with loose dirt around it, not like the cool funnel traps of ant lions.
