Thinking of buying a merino wool beanie and gloves. Would you guys recommend this to stay warm, or should I just get regular wool?

Those are good for chilly fall weather, where temps are well above freezing but the backs of your hands get goosebumps. For icy winter time? The convertible fingerless gloves with mitten hood work really, really well. Warmer than any other type of gloves/mittens.

Just don't cheap out on them. The cheap Amazon or gas station kind are really shitty and flimsy.

I am a lifelong fan of fingerless gloves. They save you from having to wear an extra layer of long sleeves when weather begins to cool down. A lot of people don't realize that the reason they feel like they don't have enough layers on is because their hands and wrists are cold.

You can always do the lighter test yourself. real 100% wool won't burn. It will turn black/smoulder, and smell like burnt hair. Synthetics will catch a flame and smell more like chemicals.

What are you talking about bro? That's true for base layers, but for everything else (sweaters, socks, jackets, blankets) merino isn't even that common. And not necessarily what you want either, since it's usually less warm than regular wool.

I have thin merino wool undegloves with fingerless wool knit mittens on top and its a good setup. I'll add a third layer of wind/waterproof mittens on top for deep winter, probably with a little insulation hood (inside the mitten) for the fingertips.
It's similar to what Simo Häyhä used, and it works. I love the flexibility it gives bc u can do anything with the undergloves so it gives a lot of flexibility and your hands never have to be bare.

Again Merino is regular wool. And even if you do find some coarse hobby farmed wool from some old breed it won't be warmer. Finer fibres make a warmer garment.

Most wool products aside from socks and base layers are not merino. Not sure what my ability to name a sheep breed has to do with this fact. Most companies don't even list the type of sheep with the exception of merino because it has exceptional qualities that other type of wool doesn't.

They almost certainly are. Maybe a very old commodity blanket isn't. Maybe a cottage industry hand spun hairy sweater isn't. But if you've bought a commercial garment any time in the last 100 years it's almost certainly Merino.

Yes. NZ exports maybe $4B in lamb compared to $300m in wool. And NZ is the world's second largest wool exporter.

That's because normal wool is worth $2.50 per KG and Lamb is worth $20 per KG genius and Merino is worth upto $30 a kg Every sheep needs to be shorn regardless of if it is bred for it's wool or not and that wool is sold to try and of set costs, which it doesn't even of set costs these days because they price of wool is shit. People use that wool for all sorts of shit, insulation, carpet and clothing.

Merino is a fine wool and is only used in things like base layers or nice silky fine wool garments, a typical 'Woolen Jersey' is not this kind of fine wool, it may have some merino blended into it but it will be mostly normal. Swandri's aren't Merino, neither are the Jerseys they do. The cost of a merino base layer is the same as a thick regular woolen jersey because of how expensive merino wool is. If you tried making a Swandri out of Merino it'd cost $1500, right now they cost about the same as a full high end base layer outfit with socks included.

Did you think you were wearing a bunch of merino shit but its just regular sheep? good news is it's perfectly fine.

Yes you will get some medium wools from other breeds. But as these breeds are seldom bred for wool they will rarely have the staple or crimp for garment use. And as they are not raised for wool they will seldom be clean or uniform enough. Yes some wool from other breeds is used. But you will have to go out of your way to find it.

You can go to Scotland, or NZ, or Argentina and they will tell you all about their use of the local strong wool to make big heavy sweaters. And nice they are too. But that is not regular wool. Go to your local outfitter for a big thick wooly outer and it will almost certainly be a medium fibre Merino.

Merino isn't special. Ultra fine Merino is.

bison wool and musk ox wool is the best by far. depending on your needs and what region you live in for availability.
bison is more durable than merino wool, as soft as cashmere, more water resistant, hypoallergenic, and warmer.
but its a lot more expensive.
musk ox wool is comparable but more on the rugged side and less on the performant side.
a good bison hat and gloves will set you back 150-200 dollars but they will outlast many pairs of merino gloves if you actually work in them. picrel my pair from somewhere around 2008-2010.

if you're on no budget you should be buying bison if you live in america, musk ox or chinese yak depending on availability elsewhere. IMO.

The reason no one says the breed the wool came from is because the average person isn't autistic enough know the difference and they don't want to confuse potential customers. The really good quality ones know what they have and make a point to tell you.

Crap quality wool will not last as long, but it will still be better than synthetic materials and cottons.

If they don't say anything, you can assume it's whatever is cheaply available at the time, which also means that there can be a pretty significant unreliability between their products.
