how can i do the AT without interacting with people constantly on the trail. i like the idea of a long trail to walk with places to resupply. start further up at the start of a season?

I assume that would work. You could also do a less popular trail like the North Country Scenic Trail. (Or something west of the mississippi)

Do the GDT instead. More beautiful, and almost no people. After that you are ready to plan your own routes without any people. If you need more safety and resupplies do the CDT, and avoid the common starting date.

I'm doing Alaska, Rockies, and Lappland every year, 2 to 4 months.

I'm old and have obligations, I passed up the offer of a lifetime 25 years ago. My father offered to pay my mortgage and buy all my gear if I would go walk it with him and I said no because I was retarded

This retarded opinion has ruined the first ~75 miles for so many people. The South doesn’t get a winter insofar as it doesn’t have a deep freeze for months on end. But the weather is very unpredictable. It can dip into the twenties or teens at night, then shoot up to the 60’s or 70’s the next day. It’s pretty wild.

i knew a guy who was thru hiking the AT who only hiked at night because he didn't want to see people. Other people do it during the winter. South Bound or doing random sections in random directions is a great way to also avoid people/crowds. Ultimately, if it's absolute solitude you want try alaska

I met a guy on the AT who was LARPing as a Kentucky long hunter. Wore a complete buckskin suit and tri-corner hat. He had blankets and I was impressed he was able to sleep through a 20F degree night

I did the AT in 2021 and it was not swamped with people at all. Granted, i started march 1st (way ahead of the bubble) and i also hiked around 20-30 miles a day. I was number 43 to finish the trail. It was really nice and id only see about 2-4 people a day. If you are down for that, go for it. if you want the nice weather just do huge miles and you wont see many people.
