There's virtually no biodiversity, there's nothing very interesting, except some old abandoned buildings and if you're really lucky you'll stumble across some old Native American settlements but those can just be driven to.
All in all, desert just isn't worth it. To me its putting yourself in needless danger for a payoff that isn't that great. There's a reason human life started in the grasslands and near water supplies. Deserts just aren't mean for people. The mountains are more beautiful anyway.
