I live in phoenix. This last summer I was homeless in 120 degree weather. All day. every day. It is not the best place to be. But the rest of the year, absolutely. Especially in northern arizona where there's more than just mountains, dirt, and thorns.

I've gotta vote for California, too. It's almost not fair though, considering how massive the state is. That said, the variety can't be beat.

The Sierra Nevadas, the southeastern deserts, the Lost Coast, Big Sur... there's just so much beautiful /out/ spaces in CA. Sure, the quality of the /out/ doors in states like WA/OR and CO are great, but CA beats them in the variety category.

And while CA's cities sprawl and are tedious, they do have easy access to great outdoors. LA has the San Gabriel Mountains (which includes Mt. Baldy) and the less-inundated coast area in Santa Barbara County. SF has the Muir Woods, Mt. Tamalpais, etc.

Other states have a lot going for them, but so does California

It's debatable whether or not Californians are really any worse than any other people in any other state, but for the sake of argument, let's say you're right.

OP said "what state do you guys think is the best year round for outdoor activities?" The question wasn't "what's the best state?" Therefore, I don't think the population of the state really comes into play. Additionally, given CA's variety of landscapes and year-round pleasant temperatures in most parts of the state, I think CA is an exemplary year-round /out/ state.

i enjoy a 4 hour drive to the beach. 7 1/2 hour drive to big bend, not bad with a nice lunch break on the way at a nice diner. driving up to colorado has been nice too, and yes it is right there.

There is no right answer. Every state has its own appeal to certain people. What you might find great about Arizona makes me hate it. It just depends on what kind of outdoor activities you are into.

Washington state, Whidbey Island, close to major city and yet so far you are practically in the wilderness.

Island surrounded by mountains, filled with forestry, eagles nest here, wolf sightings as well as much more.

Plenty of natural trails and sights. You can even see the Space needle from the highest points. I recommend.

I actually visited Telluride with my father last year as we have family in Colorado. He'd been there before for a blue grass concert they had in his hippy days. Apparently, he had a lot of fond memories in Telluride. He was really excited to tell me about his wild days in the small town.

But he sort of seemed disappointed. The concert area had been built over. The streets were crowded and people flocked in masses on bikes throughout the numerous gift shops that once held the bars my dad and his friends spent their afternoons. I suppose the town was no longer "small".

And I agreed, there were a lot of people. Too busy for me and my fathers liking. I guess it was sort of sad realizing that once a gem like this is noticed, it sort of becomes less so. Especially with all the damn people. Jesus.

Still, a gorgeous area though.

i may be a bit biased since i am from there, but i absolutely love the great hikes that are everywhere in the state. the summer is pretty hot but if you head up to the mountains its not too bad.

i am quite angry with myself that i never took advantage of the beauty of az. i live in scandinavia now, and it honestly does not compare.

Why does no one ever mention Idaho? I mean I'm not sure if I'd vote it for year round, because the winters can be quite harsh, but still. Fuck anyone who says it lacks in outdoor activities. It's too often overlooked.

After a long time, I realized that although I love the rockies, cascades, and sierra nevada, I'm way to republitard to fit in somewhere like Seattle, commifornia, oregon, or most of colorado.

North Carolina gets my vote. Western NC is an /out/ wet dream. Hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking, mountain biking, and more. East coast has lots of cool islands like the OBX and the Crystal Coast. I'm hoping this spring to kayak out to cape lookout and camp on the beach for a week. Spots for breakfast cannot be beat.

Living in Oregon spoiled the hell out of me. Hundreds of acres of forest within 2 miles, or 20 for half a million more. Ocean beaches 50 miles away to the west and mountains 50 to the east.

The sheer convenience of everything I wanted to visit made owning a car unnecessary. From my biased perspective, time spent driving someplace is time wasted.
