>>2664032In Australia we have quite a few proper caves which are neato, but in common parlance we often refer to "caves" as those bowl-shaped outcroppings in sandstone cliffs. Some are very shallow and small, some are massive and you could fit a house in them. These sheltered areas are where 10k, 20k, 40k yr old cave paintings can sometimes be found.
I live at the edge of a national park (it's a large national park but near the city, so it's well traveled and very long but not very wide). Along the creek there are many of these sheltered "cave" spots, but the largest one had 20k year old paintings in it. It's been ruined. Local kids and vandals have chipped and spraypainted and charred it so badly with campfires that any trace of the prehistoric paintings is now gone. kinda sucks when you think about it.
