Why isn't Japan a bigger out location? It's covered with tons of forest. Most of the population is squeezed into Tokyo. Basically Japan has the same problem as northern New England, the terrain is so mountainous and nasty that they just can't build any more roads or cities, so it's just left to nature. Most of Japan looks comfy as fuck.

It is a massive /out/ nation, but there are also lots of rules and social rules like don't go off trail into the forest because the government owns it and they don't associate the government a being for them but for the emperor. Something like that. But there is a shit load of hikers and people who go fishing, skiing etc. It's pretty /out/. You see old dudes fishing way out on sea walls in Hokkaido in the dead of winter which is pretty damn cold and hard work.

Been there in 2016 and did two trips across the alps and to hiroshima.
Hiking is pretty mediocre. The trail are too easy to walk or its roads. Making your own trail is pretty much impossible.

I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

The local population are extremely uneasy with western customs, it's always an uphill battle to go out and enjoy yourself without pissing someone off or breaking an insane law. I personally would recommend New Zealand, especially to Americans, it's logistically much easier to get out there and the sights/trails are the best in the world. Just my two cents.

It's pretty big already, but like with most things in Japan, it's pretty insular.
There's lots of hiking (up mountains, down mountains, around mountains, across mountains, there's lots of hiking to be done), as for (wild) camping it's against the law and nips follow the law (mostly). I do believe you can camp in private land if you get authorization from the owner, which considering some people just straight up own entire hills is kinda OK-ish.
There's a kinda cool thing with people who have small campers mounted on kei-trucks or kei-vans. Not exactly the most rugged, wildest most nature hugging thing, but some of them are kinda cool. (search "bug truck" on youtube, it's some guys up in Aomori who do conversions of kei-trucks)
As usual around the world (must be a law of the Universe), the further North you go the better the /out/ is.
But if you're looking for American/Canadian style "there's no one nor anything for miles", you're looking at the wrong country.

I hiked this trail (Kumano Kodo) and it's basically the forest from Princess Mononoke. I had to cut down my route due to a cold though. It's nice to get a handle on basic Japanese phrases before getting on the bus out of Kii-Tanabe station, but you don't have to nowadays with translation apps. The only thing I was biting my nails about was the service that transports your heavy bags to the other end of the trail at Katsuura, but they have an office right outside the station and the bags did indeed magically appear at my destination, in the hotel room I booked.

It's not something I'd want to try. The stays in the area are affordable and extremely authentic ryokan. You could pull it off but it'd be miserable and a waste of time versus just staying overnight somewhere. Roughing it really isn't the point imo, the trail is so well supported that you don't even have to carry water if you don't want. It isn't crowded in the sense you're always behind or in front of someone. Very relaxing, and I think it's meant to be.

The Japanese love to hike and they have a ton of great trails. I just did Nikko, Kamikochi, and the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route in October. I’ve also done Mt. Aso, Mt. Daisen, Mt. Fuji, Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail, and Togakushi as well as kayaking, skiing, and biking around areas. Still need to make it up to Daisetsuzan in Hokkaido.

Another Kumano Kodo hiker here. The home stays along the trail are amazing and it’s really worth it to book them. The people are great and the food was awesome. It’s also just relaxing not having to worry about anything other than a water bottle and a change of clothes. This was my view from the first night.

If you want the rough challenging hike you could do the Omine-Okugake or Kohechi routes. You’ll be out in the middle of it and will need a tent and food.

Okay so I've actually looked into Japan as an /out/ destination. The core issue is that Japan has a very different relationship with its wilderness than most countries. Some anons have hit on the big notes but the main truth is that Japan isn't a big place. Sure they have lots of mountains and forests, but half of them are just well-tread foot trails on a scenic route. It's like, if you want to go to a tourist destination in Kyushu or go tromping around in Hokkaido during the winter, most of the land is already private or developed.

Another big thing is that the very small amount of genuinely beautiful places in Japan are already extremely developed, just due to the fact that there are SO MANY PEOPLE there. Fuji-san has the entire population of Tokyo at its footsteps and a Shinkansen station. If you already have a distaste for National Parks, Japan is 100x worse and you cant even read the signage.

On top of all that, you have the logistical challenges of long flights, difficulty with finding lodging, trouble communicating with locals, etc etc. I'd only seriously reccomend it as an /out/ tourist destination if you have a solid grasp on the Japanese language and Japanese culture, because otherwise no matter what pretty waterfalls you get to see the headache of not knowing how to ask where the bathrooms are will get to you.

The generation who were young during the golden age of Japan moving forward and making cool cars and shit, they'll smile and think this is cool and want to know all about your camping set up. The younger people can be real knobs and stick to the rules though, probably because they're the ones being subjected to them too, while the old dudes can get away with anything lol. If a ranger came across someone over 40 breaking the rules, he would bow and let him be, if a ranger came across someone under 30 and white, he would throw the book at them, drag him into the office where the old dudes work, where they would laugh and let you go because they don't care.

Spent several months doing Shikoku 88 pilgrimage trail and a bunch of other hiking around Japan

Literally no one cares, I saw actual native japs wild camping in far more obnoxious spots than I ever did and no one gave a solitary fuck. Just set up late and leave early, no one is calling cops, worst case they mutter about rude foreigners. They are more curious than butthurt anyway, I got woken up at a wild camp on a buttfuck nowhere beach at sunrise by a group of Buddhist monks out to do morning ceremonies and they were super nice, asking where I was from, what I thought of Japan, oh isn't this beach so nice at sunrise, so sorry to wake you up this early etc... Don't get fudded by 4chan basement dwellers.

Trails can be hard to reach because a lot of the trailheads are only accessible by local busses which will have no English or internet presence. You have to research what fellow whitoids say online about a particular trail and follow their advice.

Popular trails can be super crowded, must have been near a thousand people on the day I went up Mt Ishizuchi and that's kind of buttfuck nowhere even if it is a little famous.

Japs carry RETARD amounts of gear, dudes with stuffed 80L packs, helmets and the whole 9 yards out for a fine summers day trip to the summit and back. They give you a flabbergasted look when you rip past them with a day pack, shorts and t shirt. Kind of funny. One peak I was at everyone looked like they had just climbed fucking everest with giant puffy parkas, ski masks and shit. I was there just in my rain jacket and shorts, everyone asks "OMG ARENT YOU FREEZING". Dude it's like 12 degrees c, it's a little chilly but not that much, what are YOU GUYS doing????

Anyway it's fun, so long as you can navigate to places and pick out trails you can figure out how to get transport to then it's fun. I'd be sketch about Hokkaido though since they have big fuck off grizzlies there.

I've wondered the same –I think it's because the flight is really expensive for Americans, and there are difficult cultural barriers to get around. If you're a rich yuppie looking to rough it, and you have a choice between camping in a natl. park somewhere on the mainland, or paying thousands to fly out to a foreign country where nobody speaks your language, you're probably going to go with the first option.

I had some adventures in Japan doing lone hikes and sleeping out.

My contribution for those interested:
Koburi Pass / Mt Hanamagari
Closest town is a sleepy little place called Higashi-Agano. You can reach it via metro train lines from Tokyo.

The track is not very well mapped. It is easy to get lost and bears also live in the woods.

It's one of the only times I got lost while hiking and was worried about sleeping outdoors due to bears.
I snuck into a shrine and slept there for shelter. There was nobody around. Here's the google pin for the shrine

Reminder that they used to be "free", built and maintained by forestry department, paid for by tax dollars until (((DOC))) was created and also borderline illegally incorporated a bunch of privately built club huts. Then said now you all have to pay money to use them. Fuck them I have never paid for that shit, take some of your tax funds you spend on trannies and use it to send dudes to keep huts in good condition. Not to mention that DOC doesn't give a single fuck about huts unless they are on popular routes anymore. Huts off the beaten path are in mid to grim shape while DOC niggers run around installing solar panels on great walk huts for goyphone charging. The last hut on Te Araroa, probably the most famous and photographed one for anyone who walks it, is a collapsing fucking dump with holes in the floor and a nasty as fuck little barrel for water.

There is so much money going to workers in the offices, and being spent on fuel because they're not allowed to go and do a week of work in a location, they have to drive in and out every day and check back into head office and the end of every shift. All that kind of bullshit destroyed it. How do you get something done in the bush when you can't go in there for a few days, absolutely stupid. No wonder it's overrun with goats and possum and stoats.

Haven't used a hut in 10 years, other than one mandatory stay for a course I was doing and don't plan on it any time soon either.

I've always wanted to walk from the northern tip of Hokkaido to the southern point of Kyushu. Just save up a fuck ton of money and spend a year just walking and seeing the sights. No car and minimal public transport. Probably avoid Tokyo entirely as I've already been.

I lived in Japan for about a year. There are some truly beautiful spots. This is Kujuu-san. During the early summer, you can hike up a trail and see a shit load of these purple flowers on one peak, and active volcanic activity, with sulfur and steam coming out, on a twin peak. The country has many beautiful hiking trails, although I noticed that most of them aren't quite as well curated as ours (trails often go directly up without switchbacks), while simultaneously getting way more foot traffic during peak season than they can accommodate.

Like others have said, though, access to most good hiking destinations is by car only. Kujuu actually had tour busses dropping people off, but you really don't want to be hiking when a bus-load of people is all dropped at the trailhead at the same time. Also, imagine rushing back to the trailhead so you don't miss the bus. Sounds awful to me. In fact, that's how I hiked Mt. Fuji and it absolutely was awful.

Additionally, going back to Kujuu, specifically, although it was an easy day hike, there was a campground about halfway up where a few dozen Japanese people had set up tents all in a grassy field. This, like other camping in Japan, was by permit/reservation only. In general, some campgrounds may require booking in advance. If you aren't fluent in the language, you need a Japanese person to navigate it for you, except the majority of them are just as clueless as you are. There really isn't wild/dispersed camping like we have in America, most certainly not out of your car. You'll almost always be right next to other people, albeit Japanese people aren't exactly rowdy campers. Even in the Japanese Alps, you will need to look into staying in the organized campgrounds on the tops of the mountains, which may require reservations. A key detail in anime like Yuru Camp needs to be noted--you will only find relatively empty campgrounds in the off-season, when it's pretty cold.
