OBJECTIVELY lowest harvest rates per licensee for every game species except moose. The climate not only kills off animals directly, it also discourages the growth of mast-bearing broadleafs so there's less food for animals, and the increased mosquito and tick population puts more stress on everything. Literally orders of magnitude less wildlife than say Tennessee or North Carolina for example. The amount of time you can go without laying eyes on a single living thing that isn't a tree up here is depressing as fuck. There's no point in even owning a gun.

Spring and Autumn are total gambles, sometimes they gradually shift temps over the three months, sometimes they are completely fucking random week to week before stabilizing for Summer/Winter, sometimes it's just a super abrupt shift between the seasons. you can have years where in snows in May and years where the last snow is in late January

Trees that produce edible nuts instead of shitty needles that fill the soil with acid and kill everything. There's a reason why all over the world, at the far north you basically only have two animals, giant grazers like moose that live off lichen and bark, and giant predators that live off them. Nothing else can survive even if the weather was great because there's no food. Northern New England is the northern terminus of the growing range for nearly all hardwoods except birch, and it shows. You don't get the "walking on marbles" phenomenon in autumn like you do further south. You can walk in the woods all day in New England and not see a single wild animal except maybe a single chipmunk on a stonewall. Nobody is ever successful hunting here unless they go all out and set up treestands on private property over bait where animals have been patterned with trail cameras.

It's all about the Jet Stream and movement of the polar vs tropical air masses. Picrel is air temperature at about 10,000 feet. You'll note that it's not a steady gradient from hot to cold as you go north from the equator. There's a stark line between the warmer-than-freezing tropical air mass and the freezing polar air mass. During the summer, the tropical air mass expands and cold air mass retreats north. As the seasons change, the cold air starts moving southward.

Actual surface temperatures are affected by many different factors and you obviously get more gradient from south to north, but typically the biggest factor is where you are in relation to dividing line between tropical and polar. The line has ripples (called "Rossby waves"), and the dominant weather pattern along this line is the "mid-lattitude cyclone" which is the common "cold fronts and warm fronts" that weathermen talk about. During the spring and fall, it's anyone's guess where the line will be on any given day, so there tends to be a wide variety of weather with substantial shifts in temperature, and where the actual precipitation you get varies a lot. And of course, on rarer occasions during winter and summer you can wind up with weirdly shaped polar/tropical waves and unseasonable temperatures.

IIRC, this year being El Nino means that the Jetstream is likely to be further south, leaving the northeast more likely to be in the "cold, dry" area north of the rossby waves.

No it's not. There is objectively, statistically, scientifically a dramatically smaller population density of almost all wild animals in New England compared to the rest of the country. This is reflected in bag limits and is widely known and acknowledged by experts. It is common knowledge that ME, NH, and VT is the worst hunting zone in the American mainland.

So is it something in the air that makes New Englanders shitty hunters? Why do we have the lowest harvest rates for everything? Every single consistently successful hunter I've ever met used a blind or treestand on private property. I've never met someone who could just go walk out in the woods and bring home food. When I hunted down south it was like being on another planet or something.

Sounds like a thrilling adventure. Packing it all up and just driving far far away in one long haul journey, and probably forever. There are so many other people, me included, who would love to do that.

I don't need much. A room with a locking door, a bed to sleep in, a desk to sit at with my PC/books, and simple facilities like a bathroom and kitchen. But I cannot live without them realistically.

There's a job opportunity on the horizon in engineering though, so one day I very well might escape to another country (sick of the UK's terrible weather and degenerating society) in a similar manner. I'll be happy to go before it all just becomes too awful to watch from a native's perspective.

You need something with folding rear seats. I'm 6' even and I have just enough room to stretch out. I cut a piece of plywood to fit the rear and put several layers of camp matting on it and I'm very comfortable. I don't recommend the inflatable camp mats because they never last more than a few months of regular use, not even thermarest. Stitching blows and you get a massive bubble.

I usually just shit at work or public bathrooms. Also in the woods if I'm in the middle of nowhere. There was only one time where I had an emergency in the middle of the night and I just used a trash bag, wasn't a big deal.

Yeah that's true. When 30% of a paycheck goes on rent and the place isn't that great, it would be an interesting experiment. Do you use a battery pack or a few power banks to keep everything running? I guess you can charge them at work just fine.

I use a bunch of power banks and charge them at work or while driving. The only electronics I use are my phone and flashlights, occasionally a hair trimmer. One power bank the size of a deck of cards can charge my phone over two times from empty. I have a solar panel somewhere but rarely use it. My old truck allowed me to charge with the engine off. That worked fine for over a year. Then I got stranded with a dead battery way out in a national park and had to walk 10 miles to flag down someone for a jump. In January. So don't do that, or at least carry a jump kit.

It does not regularly reach 90 degrees anywhere in New England. Maybe once or twice a year. Even down in New Jersey it hardly reaches 90 degrees. There are some summers where we don’t even get above 85.
