This expert army guy carries a 5 pound felling axe everywhere so he can build a survival log cabin at a moment's notice. What do you carry, a shitty little saw? How are you going to cut down a 3' diameter old growth oak tree with a ching chong pocket saw? Not gonna make it.

i do agree on the axe though but the scenario is different, if camping alone i prefer axe but with others can use hatchet and saw aplit between, saw is generally good enough if u bring your own shelter for any length though

A mid-sized axe like the Gransfors SFA, or Fiskars X10/Gerber Freescape 17 is nice to have but it's really not necessary even for winter camping if you have the skill. I only carry the X7, and when I add a 12" pruning saw to that which only weighs like 12 ounces I can put down enough firewood to burn all night in like 30 minutes. Usually that will translate to about 25 gallons of mixed hardwood and softwood, like a plastic Walmart tote filled heaping full. I don't feel the need to carry a heavier axe anymore. But then again I have very long arms, so a hatchet in my hands might be performing almost like a camp axe. I've also been using and sharpening axes for 20 years. I really don't like carrying shit.

First of all, that isn't a full-size handle and I really doubt that's a 5lb head -- so if that's a boy's axe, or some 28-30in axe that weighs close to 5lb altogether then yeah I'd say that's a decent bring for a 2 week outing. No real reason to bring more than a boy's axe (in terms of an axe) if you aren't planning on being dropped in an old-growth forest for that time.
