Hello anons,
Just got back from a weekend in Washington-Jefferson national forest and I’m curious to know what you think of my gear/trip. I packed for a two and a half day camping/birding expedition along one of the mountains in the northern end of the forest. Here’s everything packed up in my old seabag strapped to a chinkshit external frame. I have a better pack but it has started to break down after a decade of use, I’ve been wanting to upgrade to a frame and larger capacity for awhile now and wanted to see if I could make my seabag work before shelling out the dough for a purpose made pack. Everything packed up came out to 40lbs.

I arrived at the trailhead Friday afternoon with very little light left. I made camp off the trail about a half mile in and tucked in for the night, nothing much of note Friday, though it did unexpectedly rain and I had to scramble in the night to get my rain fly on.

Saturday morning into early afternoon, on the trail. Beautiful day on the trail, weather perfectly clear. Ran into some friendly hunters who warned me about a black bear they’s seen, and some non-communicative chink tourists. You know we Americans get guff for being loud but god damn if I haven’t been able to hear every asian hiking group from a mile away, those fellas are noisy.

After heading about 5 miles south along the ridge line I decide to get off the trail and make camp. I head over about 300 yards down the eastern slope of the hill and find a nice peaceful spot to start setting up my tent. I hate this picture because it doesn’t do justice to how pretty it was.

After settling in, I make a fire with materials I’ve gathered from the forest and a magnesium striker. Dinner this night was Beef Chorizo and Black Bean Tacos, with corn tortillas and roasted garlic. The chorizo was cooked and potted Thursday night for preservation. I had a bag of cilantro and like for garnish but I forgot it like a dumbass.

This is the last photo I took before my phone died, just sipping some whiskey and enjoying the sunset. That night was a treat with a perfectly clear sky, I just laid in my tent comfy peering up at the stars through my binoculars until I fell asleep. The next morning I made cowboy style coffee and went birding. I saw a barred owl, black capped chickadees, a tufted titmouse, a raven, and a hawk and or falcon I have yet to identify. After that I packed up and hiked back to the car.

Made a last minute adjustment to my route which wouldn’t get me near any good spots so I ended up leaving behind the fishing gear (along with the bowie knife). Next time though, backpack fishing is something I really want to get into. Bird watching is fun and it costs nothing to do. If you don’t give a shit about birds I suppose it would be boring but me I love watching them and listening to their songs, they add a color, peacefulness, and liveliness to any environment that I can really appreciate. Identifying and finding rare birds is thrilling too, it becomes like hunting where you need to study the animal and scout for the best places you’re more likely to find them.

I can definitely see why sea biscuits have been a staple of travelers for centuries. It’s dirt cheap, easy to make, and will satisfy your stomach until the next meal so on that basis I would recommend it, though I suppose on longer thru hikes its nutritional value would be suspect. I often pair hard tack with peanut butter for this reason.

I agree it was a lot of weight but I knew that going in. A lot of the items I brought were for proof of concept or seeing what I like and what I don’t. I plan on having this setup much less bulky and heavy next time I go out.

Nice trip and pictures. What's that fishing pole? That looks like its a good piece of kit. I just went bird watching for the first time recently. It was a good time just hanging out and scoping out the lake. Even had some mad lad in a biplane fly out over the lake and start doing barrel rolls, stalls, and flips right as I got to a cozy spot and cracked my beer. Saw some heron's, greater scaup(?), mallards, buffleheads(?), a lot of Canada geese, some birds I couldn't identify, and two lesbians who thought they were alone and out of sight across the lake. Shit was SO CASH. Perhaps you should look at getting a spotting scope. I've found it's great to see the wildlife (and sultry lesbians) closer than the binos can get you. Draws a lot of attention though, which can be good or bad depending on what you're out for.
