Sorry anon, that's how it is since Covid. I was able to sell my bike this summer for more than I paid for it in 2018. Same with kayaks and rafts.

The tech is way better in bikes now too so if you're willing to put the money down it will last you for a decade.

A 7/10 skilled rider on a cheap hardtail will SPANK a 6/10 rider on a full suspension even on gnarley tracks he doesn't know
You'll just bend some wheels and eventually crack a frame but it's doable and quite frankly I prefer it.
I haven't done it in years either, and I've never ridden a $10,000 downhill bike, but i'd always preferred hardtails especially when I was cutting my own drop downs/jumps and could smooth them out. Full suspension is better for big hits but they ALL bottom out way to easy from factory and the pedal mush is rage inducing.

Fleeting memories of guys on cross country carbon bikes throwing their legs like mad men to get up a hill, getting passed by 14 years old who then hit jumps they decide to skip on the way down 'b-b-but my gear.. my bike!’ lmao. I'd start with learning how to ride again before you worry about the cost. Buy a used bike for $300 and trash it.

This, I've got a decent hardtail, it's a cheap frame. But it's got very good wheels and a decent fork. In low speed techy terrain and smoother fast trails the thing absolutely mogs my 2012 yeti sb66. Fucking blows it out of the water, that's how far modern geometry and tires have come. I keep up with decent riders on proper modern trail bikes too.

I gotta get a full sus though because my pussy ankles and wrists can't cope with it now I'm getting older. But yeah OP, modern bikes absolutely fuck and if you have to spend $2000 for a decent second hand bike it's well worth it, there's a reason so many boomers and normies are taking up riding these days, because the bikes are a cheat code compared to even 10 years ago.

There is zero legitimate performance reason a brand new downhill bicycle should cost the same as a full size motocross dirtbike.
The forces and durability demands on the suspension, frame, and wheels are so much less it’s like a toy in comparison, yet the bicycle is still way more fragile and they cost the same

Craigslist and marketplace. Check every day. Something will pop up. I got my Specialized from a guy getting out of riding, $200 and it was in great shape. Got a Trek for $50 as well. It was an older model, but also in great shape. Just keep an eye out, there are deals to be had if you are patient.

Not OP, the anon you replied to - also this. Look at ANY cycle sport from 20 years ago and world renown professionals look like a joke.
The last I had was a Giant hard tail (maybe 2008/9), at most $500 and fucking thrashed it. I had crazy to me step downs I built - 15ft drop 50ft gap - and the guys who had been riding a decade longer and $3,000 Kona slope style bikes looked at me like I was smoking crack out of tinfoil because they bought slopestyle bikes and only rode graval trails while our entire bikes cost less than their tires.
Another thing I'd mention is wheel size. 26" has been fazed out and so much is 27.5" now. I've nevr actually _ridden_ them but the momentum alone through just a parking lot is wildly different.

Anyway OP you don't need a $2,000 you need a $200 dollar bike to see if you can still hold up, but if you _find_ a 2k bike that orginally cost 5-10 and isn't beat to shit? BUY IT. You won't break it and will have a lot more room to grow than you di even ten years agk

It's never been cheaper than it is right now.
Get a Polygon, they're fucking decent, and high spec for the price. I got my son an Xtrada, then a T7, and have a T8 for myself.
They're not top-tier bikes by any means, but it's unlikely I will ever exceed their capabilities.
