>>2670939One of my favourite rescue stories happened in Austria, where a guy went hiking in the outback in summer and didn't come back as per his itinerary so the local police sent out Search and Rescue to find him. They couldn't find him either, so after a couple days the situation was looking more and more dire, he must be low on water/food, and they brought in the local abbos to help. The abbos built a tall platform next to the basecamp for S&R, and put a couple spotlights on the top of it. They lit it up at night, and sat around the fire talking and eating and having a good time. The lost guy came walking out of the bush either the first or second night they did that, because he could see the bright light from where he was.
I guess the traditional way of retrieving lost members of the tribes was to build big bonfires at night, so that the people could find their own way back, rather than send out teams in all directions.
