Have any of you been SCUBA diving? Did you enjoy the experience? Was it difficult to learn?

I'm looking to get a masters in marine biology, so there is a chance that I will have to learn not only how to scuba dive, but how to be actually useful underwater for field work.

Only have my open water cert, and I do mountain stuff but it was worth just to experience the underwater breathing. when you get deep it is so quiet and peaceful in a way only the mountains are, and you get access to so many more cool areas by the coast. training wasn't hard, just have to learn to be calm when you do a mask purge (hold the top of the mask with one hand and lean back).

Giving breaths to an injured diver while swimming them back to shore, mouth to nose (only did training on this though l)

At a certain point, where things were just so quiet and peaceful, I had the sudden feeling that I am in a foreign place that I don't belong. I am willing to do Advanced Open Water or whatever it's called, but it's expensive to buy everything.

Open water cert from PADI as well. I did mine when I turned 18 in Grand Cayman with two Aussie instructors.
Biggest thing for me was just to calm the fuck down. Not that I was panicking or anything, but the tension and unease I held in myself from going underwater kept a shitload of air in me that I had to almost triple the weight on my belt. Being tense like that also causes you to suck up a ton of air.
As first two anons say, learn those steps and techniques as they are the biggest things. However, as other divers have pointed out to me, don't use a spare air tank. Unless the other person in need is another trained diver still in their senses they may suck all of that tiny bit of air before they even reach the surface. And if someone's freaking out in such a situation instead of just having a regulator or low air issue, then they're likely to panic and grab you or your own regulator from you. When it comes down to it diving is really all about peace of mind. I was simply tense during my training but I did enjoy it a lot. It is a very expensive hobby, however.
And good on you OP for going through marine biology. I've always loved marine life and the seas and also thought of going into marine biology but I just couldn't stand all the junk in biology class.

got basic open water certification from the boy scouts when I was a kid
it is cheap and easy to start out, but if you want to do anything other then shallow warm water diving, it gets expensive really quickly
if you want to dive in any seawater north of like 40 latitude in the US, you will need a dry suit, which requires its own training certification, and for you to get the suit itself, which is usually thousands of dollars

Its easy af. The main skill is breathing to maintain buoyance basically how high or low you are.
Try to have the keast possible weight you need or youll be constantly adjusting and harder to control buoyancy.
When you do Advanced make sure you di buoyancy and just tell the instructor you want to practice buoyancy a lot.
Remember when you get in the water, your wetsuit will get heavier as water seeps in and you can be straight and let out your breath and decend.
To check buoyancy get in the water wait for your suit to get wet. Then breath in and let air out of your bcd/adjust weights until your eye level with the surface. Thats the ideal buoyancy. Youl hae ti adjust towards the end as you lose air from your tank but only minimally.
With those tricks youll be better than 99% of divers.
Learn to blow and shoot bubble rings and everyone will think youre a top dog

I got my PADI advanced open water the typical pleb way on Koh Tao, one of the best weeks of my life.
I'll echo what other anons have said, it's easy to learn, just gotta relax and remember a few basic rules. Good buoyancy and breath control takes a while to master.
Extremely peaceful activity, especially as you get deeper, really cool to get so close to wildlife too. I think they kinda know you're out of your habitat and don't give a shit.
Until you get some aggressive trigger fish defending it's nest, they really charge at you full speed with some weird teeth.

I've only done around 30-40 dives in tropical waters, but always nice to have the opportunity when you travel somewhere.
I'd definitely recommend anyone to do the advanced course if you've time, a lot more diving, and deeper/varied with less theory learning.

Do they do screenings to tell you whether you're save to do scuba diving? I heard a good chunk of the population are at risk of stroke from the pressure or some sort causing an oxygen bubble to move in people's brains.

I have the same experience with scuba diving. I'd say that underwater is far more alien than the mountains though. The under water landscapes are surreal
10/10 would recommend.

But yeah I did NAUI open water when I was 18 at school. Been doing it a couple times a year but never got around to advanced. At some point I will. Not difficult, only thing that spooked me was navigation by dead reckoning, the area we did it in was full of sea weed
