I have this one but honestly it is seriously overkill for most cases. Unless you use them frequently you should consider renting, it's like 20 bucks a weekend. I wouldn't buy traditional or cheap commercials either, just go for professional gears.

Are there different kinds for different purposes? I want snowshoes for a short hike (1-2 miles) pulling a toboggan loaded with camping gear.

I cant really get a grip on reviews or general advice about snowshoes since retards will use them once in either conditions that probably didnt warrant them or ultra deep powder snow. Apparently traditional is still the best for breaking trail in deep powder, however it obviously lacks traction and uphill usage. And yeah what the other guy said, It seems that a lot of cheap snowshoes are just not gonna make it after a few trips. I just got a pair of msr evo ascents because that has been THE snowshoe everyone can land on and recommend

One of the most recommended shoes is the MSR denalisn(modern version is the evo). They're pretty indestructible, the straps are replaceable, and they sized well for trails. If you need bigger shoes for fresh powder they sell the flotation tail.

Tubbs, atlas, MSR make good shoes all around. Size them for what you plan on doing (smaller for trails and mountain hiking, bigger for fresh powder and trail breaking.

I'm seeking more European recommendations though I believe MSR does export here.
I'd use exclusively in mountainous terrain, also very curios about DIY in case anyone tried.

I own picrel, but we don't have any mountains. We do get > 1m of snow in the winter. Skis are usually better for deep snow, but snowshoes are useful for some scenarios. These ones are the best for deep snow excluding some bigger traditional designs. Pros: relatively light, compact, no crampons. Anything with crampons sucks ass in near-zero weather. I don't think it would make sense for you to make your own if you're in the mountains. The traditional indian designs are not intended for that.

If you don't have any appreciable elevation gain and aren't carrying anything heavy these look fine.
If you're wanting to do anything technical or carry an overnight winter load--these will be lacking.

Similar experience. I have a pair only cuz they were uses $25. Coils or spikes have sufficed me 90% of the time.

Yes. The ones that don't have a hinged heal (the heal is attached to the surface) are for flat terrain -- the tubbs aren't as aggressive as the MSR but fine for medium difficulty. Size also matters: if you're packing weight or are a fatso you need extenders or a bigger shoe.

I'll stick to MSR, I actually have to go up steep terrain and do technical traverses--which these look horrible for. These look fine If you want overpriced shoes that you can basically only use on established trails with very little elevation gain.
