Eric Hanson could have gotten 6 months in jail and 5 yrs probation plus a $5000 fine for sleeping 200 yards away from the permitted campsite after rescuing a friend who had rabdo. A Class 2 Misdemeanor category contains crimes like violent assault (punching someone at a bar). Source:

What would you do in this situation? He takes a plea deal for no jail and 1k fine, but I think I'd be pissed enough to take it to a jury trial rather than be convicted of a Class 2 Misdemeanor.

not gonna watch a video but you have to really try to get a charge for camping out of bounds in a national park. unless this was at grand canyon or zion or something where the cops are on edge, most any LE ranger is just gonna make an out of bounds camper leave. only if you give them attitude or are actively doing other illegal things with no care will they do more. judges dont like parks cases about protecting the resource because “who cares about a couple trees” and generally wont go for it so it must be an ironclad case for the LE ranger to be willing to send it to an attorney. prosecutors will only take cases they can win.

That's not even what they got charged for.
He and the other dude who weren't pussies were going to finish the trip. A ranger told them to move their stuff. So they did.

It was the middle of the night, in heavy snow, and they passed another ranger who told them to just go past the general store and they were good to set up camp.

They hiked in the dark, in the snow, for a while longer and passed a gas station with a CONVENIENCE store, thought that was what the ranger was talking about, and set up camp.

Weeks later he gets a criminal citation in the mail. Turns out the GENERAL store they were supposed to pass was a whole 200 yards further down the road.

I dislike his hypebeast clickbait sort of video style, and I think that people who are broadcasting their experience to millions of other people should hold themselves and be held by others to a higher standard. If joe normie sees some youtube influencer personality go out and break the rules they're going to think they can get away with it as well. These guys should have paid the fine and apologized but they decided to instead blow it up on social media for more views.

Camping out of bounds happens, and it frequently goes unnoticed and unpunished but it's not something which should be normalized. The fact of the matter is that the other guy wasn't injured, decided to leave their tents pitched out of bounds after the emergency had passed so they could take a day hike clearly planning to stay a second night out of bounds and the ranger called them on it. Clearly the ranger didn't have a problem with them camping there because of the medical emergency but staying a second night so they could take a recreational hike was pushing their luck and they knew it.

What it boils down to for me is that if you're going to show your experience to millions of impressionable people, you need to follow the rules and set a good example for them.

The problem was never the fine, the problem was the threat of jail time and probation.
Probation that would have prevented him from traveling outside of the US and doing his job.

Can you elaborate on that? My understanding of the timeline was that he and dan becker were doing the rim to rim, dan had a medical emergency so they made an emergency camp and called for help. The day after dan was evacuated eric hikes to the north rim, leaving his tent in place at the trailhead (this is the recreational hike I mentioned) and the rangers tell him that he needs to move to an actual campsite. Since he had spent so much of his day hiking to the north rim, he ended up hiking to the campsite in the dark and made the mistake of camping out of bounds.

Like I said before, I think it's a positive thing for the community to be exposed to this, and for it to happen to a fairly popular creator. Someone like him isn't going to miss rent or a car payment over the fine, he probably barely notices it. The normiesphere of hikers is shown the consequences of negligence and the importance of camping in designated areas, especially in extremely popular sites like the grand canyon. I don't really care if someone wants to camp where they'd like in a in a large national forest or appropriately low traffic area but at a popular site like the grand canyon the rules are what keep the place from being completely trashed.

It seemed pretty open and shut to me, it was a genuine misunderstanding and there were no damages done. I get why these strict campground rules exist in the Grand Canyon, because it's a desert and some dickheads laying their tent on fragile vegetation that could get irreparably damaged is bad. And I could understand pressing charges if this was the summer or something, but in the winter the tents are just resting on 4 feet of snow anyway.

The guy with the emergency left.
The youtuber and some another dude on his team stayed to finish their hike.

The whole issue was it was night in a snowstorm, so no visibility, when they were heading to set up camp for the night before starting back across the canyon the next day.
They thought they were setting up camp where the ranger told them was ok, just past a certain store. But it turns out the ranger was actually referring to a different store a whole 300 yards further down the road.

All this is even more absurd considering the recent Biden plan to let illegals stay in national parks.

The point he made was that a normie wouldn’t have been subjected to the threat of punishment to the degree he was (max fine, 5yrs probation, etc)
He claimed the prosecutor explicitly said they wanted to make an example out of him, and then trying to make a deal to get him to not publish any video from the trip is evidence that they targeted him for being a YouTuber.
A normie would have had a couple hundred dollar fine and thats it.
The only example that was made was made was how the US is an anarcho-tyranny

YouTubers don’t have 20+ people for every little thing, increasing their impact, typically they are filming themselves or have one dedicated camera guy at max.
In any case, he did actually have a filming permit, since some of the filming was supposed to be for the network show Epic Trails.
That permit is how they knew they weren’t just normies and were there to film.

But jokes aside, congress is corrupt. The executive branch has bottomless power most of which was ceded to them by congress- and they are both literally on the same take... openly. The SCOTUS (for all their illegitimate power) piddles in social issues, and really have no say in how the executive uses public lands in accordance with duly enacted laws of congress.

As the US goes into further debt the use of the "public" lands for things that dont benefit the people WILL be on the table. As dozens of millions of illegal immigrants co tinge to flood in constantly do you think the use of the vast swathes of the western states currently held as federal land will not come on the table as an option?
