>>2674635>meal ready to eat>dehydratedIt’s definitely better to make your own food, but meals usually aren’t ready to eat. I’ve tried no cook but no thank you.

>>2674586The history of Mountain House is pretty interesting. The parent company, Oregon Freeze Dried, got a contract with the government sometime during Vietnam. The military wanted a solution for special operations. They wanted something lighter, less fragile, and unable to freeze. Oregon Freeze Dried provided them with entire freeze dried meals, which they later started marketing on the civilian market as Mountain House. The military still uses them as rations for long range patrols (they’re designated as LRP rations instead of MRE; I wish it was pronounced LARP but but it’s not).
For decades you could get vacuum-packed MH meals in military packaging from surplus dealers. In the last three or four years those have vanished, as the civilian ProPak packaging meets military requirements. Dudes who require LRP rations as get the same vacuum sealed MH ProPaks that you can buy at REI.
So if you want to LARP as an army guy in the woods, you can just bring vacuum-sealed Mountain House.
