The rational part of me knows that I can swim and that there's nothing dangerous in the water but I cant get rid of the monkey brain that says to get the fuck onto dry land

I was the same with snorkelling in the reefs and ocean, you just need to keep exposing yourself to it, even if it's just in short sessions.

There's nothing dangerous in the water a good large brightly colored swim speed reducing floatation vest with easy to unlatch clasps won't protect you from.
also, bring a water-resistant keyboard next time, this one is starting to short out.

My wife feels afraid if we get further then 200 meters from shoreline, it ain't rational working on phobia is weird maybe paddling just ain't for you, I have the same thing with heights, I push through but it stills affects me at the same intensity, facing your fears does not necessarily make them go away but you don't have to let fear stop you

150ish metres out this September in North Wales. My brother and I saw a massive formal fin break the water and a huge shape briefly roll under 200 metres away.
We got to shore to be told it had passed perhaps an arms length behind us about a minute before we saw it. We never even noticed. It was an Orca.

There’s nothing swimming around out there that wants to eat you. I wouldn’t worry about it. You don’t even need a PFD. The best time to go is at night. Trust me bro.
