I can make a shelter, tie knots, do basic notches, feel fit enough, etc., but for the love of god I am too retarded to get a basic fire going.

I have a ferro rod/lighter and I've been attempting dakota fire holes with log cabin builds. The problem is getting things going: usually I get as far as lighting the tinder but I'm unable to go from there. Any tips?

You might be trying to make your fire too small. This old infographic is sort of right. Two armfuls of kindling is overkill but “a shit ton more than a handful” is accurate. And it never hurts to have too much tinder, kindling, or fuel.

Dakoota fire holes need a continuous feed of light material. The idea is you are using a high draft/rate of combustion fire method. Small fuel constantly... afterall, the point is to smokeless flue gasses.

When you say "unable to go from there", do you mean your tinder goes out before anything else can catch? You might want a longer-burning form of tinder or a firestarter like waxed cotton or cotton balls soaked in olive oil.

Learn the fire triangle and practice making fires at home in the fireplace with whatever methods you want to use in the field. Then practice again and again. Then practice again outside in a fire ring in all types of weather, specially with wet wood for your locale and how to work with it/around it.

Skip the ferro rod. No advantage even in inclement weather. Above 14k, doesn't work well.

Carry at least three Bic lighters that are clear sided so you can monitor fuel status. Keep on person and inside pack.

If I decide to bother with a fire, I always ventilate/feed with a Dakota fire hole and ramp. Less smokeand thus soot and fire is self-extinguished by morning.

Buy military fire starters or else roll your own vaselined cotton balls.

I often carry an old boom box antenna that has both ends cut off. I extend this telescoping tube and blow.from the fat end at the base of my fire when starting it. Has not worked during horizontal rain outside Juneau and above treeline elsewhere.

If.you have the energy,.build.a.reflector behind your fire, will be glad you did. Morning, leave no trace behind except for your covered up cat hole. Packing out poo is a.sick practice.

If your tinder pile is burning out before the rest of the fire ignites than you need more tinder/ more pencil to finger sized twigs to fed it until your fire lay starts burning. Fatwood is good to have on you and you can buy a bag of it at the store...should be able to start quite a few fires with one stick...but if you are having troubles you can just split and shave the whole stick down for tinder and if you can't get a fire going with that you deserve to freeze.

this sounds needlessly difficult when you could use a normal steel straw

NTA. I don’t think you’re really following what he’s saying. It’s the exact same thing as using a steel straw but it can be packed away smaller since it’s telescoping. I’ve seen them sold as a pocket bellows but an old antenna is the same thing.

I guess what I meant is that the boombox antennas I've seen are stupid narrow. I can't imagine having an easy time blowing through 1mm tube, which is why I was thinking a steel straw would be better. I didn't know that they made wider telescoping tubes though so this makes sense though.

I just use hand sanitizer (one of those tiny travel bottles) as an accelerant for getting fires going, just a little dollop on a log then your kindling on top works well, quite wind resistant. Of course there are several other good reasons to have sanitizer on you when /out/ too.

When I was in cub scouts (1980’s) we made fire starters from drinking straws, cotton balls, and Vaseline. I made a few a while back and still carry one.

SOL Tinder Quik is the best firestarter. Followed by cotton balls drenched in vaseline. And then it varies but if unprepared, consider cutting open a cat tail pod. Scads of oily whispy fire starter inside justbpich and roll what you need. Plus you can cook the root and eat it. Don't eat it uncooked, you'll get parasite and suffer.

Old tire tubes works well, if you cut them into small circles they're useful as a rubber band. Best firewood is a standing dead tree, anything from small saplings to huge trees that have thick bark you can rip off. Dead stumps in the ground can be great too, just burn a whole dam stump if the conditions allow for a big fire, make sure it's ripped out of the ground first otherwise it might start an underground fire.

Lots of good advice itt. I’ll just mention the importance of choosing the right fuel and god placement. I bet anything you’re smothering your tinder by placing secondary fuels that are too large or too close together and obstruct airflow. Before I light my tinder pile I build a little Lincoln log-style structure around it with sticks. This way they can catch without obstructing airflow. It also provides a strong structure to pile larger sticks over teepee-style.
For fuel don’t use anything rotten, or spongy like alder. And remember leaves and paper are the worst tinders.

Birch bark is a great fire starter.

Experiment /out/ under good conditions until it is intuitive.
