The bongs have an active discord and regularly have meetups.
Beyond that I've never heard of /out/ meetups. I've never heard of any US /out/ meetup.

Yes.

My group was based in a city, while I lived in the suburbs. But there’s no need to live near the other group members considering the nature of the group (backpacking). It’s not an activity that’s done in the city; we stuck to national forests and national parks. We had members who lived fairly far off but still regional at least.

I think a few people went to the general area. One person definitely showed up at the designated spot, but no one else did… I think?

A better approach might be more planning. Do it well in advance, even though it’s a small trip. Make a definite plan for a very specific time, place, and activity.
